They never were a carrier power...

They just sent the KGB... And free third-rate weapons to attract and retain Fraternal Socialist Allies.

On the subject of Glowing Sov's... Adam Higgenbothen's book "Midnight at Chernobyl" which examines the 1986 accident and explosion... is an amazing book! He breaks the tech details down to explain it in lay-terms. Really well done. Worth a read.

Reminds you that we DID win the Cold War. But we should have sent all our Socialists and fruitbats to Russia in 1990 to experience their newly- Glasnosted workers paradise. Guarantee we could have deported 10 million of them and not had to worry about Drag Queen story hours at our elementary schools.

maybe you don't need them if you're not always "projecting power" all over the place to get your way?
no, we the nation with the world's ultimate navy, and the most heavily funded MIC in human history, are afraid that the Rooskies are going to conquer Ukraine "and then keep going" presumably here. In rowboats I guess. Or maybe kicking behind those duck shaped pool floats. Time to build more carriers to diffuse that threat.

    Well said, but...

That power came from bailing the world out a couple times because "Out system actually works."

And as Lord Acton so aptly put it: "Power tends to corrupt. Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

There is China, which is growing, and intends us no good. We could probably cut it to 5 carrier groups and put a lot more into medium and long range un manned air power. Why risk your homies when you can kill'em from the bunker.

Or maybe they do not need an expensive carrier fleet to project power since their battles seem to be in their own neighborhood.
Correct, they have never really been into expeditionary deployments that I can think of either plus Americans don’t even realize carriers can only really be in permissive environments.

These days carriers are really mostly great for going kicking the asses of some weak folks that don't have technology or much of a military.
The Russians don't have the money to be going around the world playing neo-rome and having troops killing folks on 100+ countries at any given time.
The Russians also don't have a global empire they have to defend so carrier nice to have but if you don't have money well tough.
Based on their budget size throwing all their money into subs instead of a carrier seems a lot more practical.

The Chinese on the other hand want carriers because they plan to be able to project power throughout their side of the pacific.

But more than likely, in the end if China and America ever actually went to war, any carrier that got too close to anything is going to be sinking or simply too radioactive for anyone to survive on.

right. it further dispels the notion that putin wants to get the band back together and take over the world.

Which is why I say we need to cut that back and invest in more refined air power.

I think there is a good chance we might one day look back on this little CIA vs Russia war in the Ukraine as one of the last, if not the last big hurrah for wars that humans fought.

The future of war is about to fundamentally change in my opinion.
I'm not talking about when some super power decides to go boot stomp some primitives, but actual primary peer war among the better militaries.

So, he’s lying thar he wants the Soviet Republics back? The invasion of Ukrain is what, a feint?

Russia’s GDP is about the size of Texas’ GDP. It’s a poor country with about half its rural population (10% of the total) without running water. It’s always been poor. The SovIet Union ran on lies more than anything, and so too does Putin‘s Russia. A navy is expensive.

Having been constantly invaded and having their capitol sacked the Russians want what they have always wanted, a buffer zone sphere of influence so they can feel good about themselves as the most important thing and not have to worry about the invading hordes being right on their soft underbelly.

CIA wanted a war, the MIC wanted a war, the Global Elites needed to kick the legs out from Russia because they weren't playing ball with the new world order.
Putin fell for the deception that the Ukraine was about to join Nato and suddenly have a bunch of enemy troops on their border. He fell for the trap and there is no real going back. The war will probably eventually end very much with things on the ground as they were before, but Russia won't be a problem for the Global Elites anymore and they will have been able to use resource shortages to cement their new world order in Europe. Who cares if half a million people wind up dead right?

I suspect the Global Elites might also want to kick the legs out from under China a bit when they are done with Russia, if the Chinese continue to be a bit too stubborn about some stuff.

And all the Soviet era weapons, tanks, ammunition will be consumed thereby opening up a huge market opportunity for the US MIC (and 10% for the big guys and girls)
