Greetings! New to the forums and am interested in your opinion concerning my current search for a application specific bolt gun if you have time. Sorry for the new thread, just could not find one that fit my specific questions.
I am looking for a rifle that will serve three roles; 1) Varmint Rifle 2) Long Range Rifle (maybe an entry-level competition gun) and 3) Deer Rifle - only when needed. I also don't want to break the bank, but do want some "custom" features such as an adjustable trigger, bedded action, floated barrel and detachable mag.
My first platform thought was the Rem 700, but to get all of the extras I want I was going to have to go big on the aftermarket side, which pushes me up over $1K (told you I wanted to go cheap!). Then I ran across the new rifle, Model 10 Predator Max 1, Savage has out for 2010. I have never owned a Savage, but have always heard of legendary out of the box accuracy. It comes with the kit I want (accu trigger, accu stock and detachable mag) plus has a longer fluted barrel (24") as compared to other Savages.
Caliber - Well, I am firm believer that one should select caliber for application and since I am want a "do all" rifle I have been looking at a parallel caliber. I am really leaning toward the .243 because 1) Although not the best, it is widely known as a great varmint caliber 2) It has been winning some long range sniper matches over the last few years 3) This Savage carries the 1 in 9.25 twist rate which will allow me to better use the heavier projectiles for long range as compared to the 1 in 10 most .243 carry 4) It is the most popular deer-sized game caliber and 5) I can push a 75gr to 115gr projectile, which offers tons of choices when working up loads for different applications.
I spoke to the Custom Shop at Savage and they can put me one together with a digital camo stock, green or black stock rather than the real-tree for my dealer's price of $822 shipped. As mentioned, if I wanted to get serious about long range matches I would use this as an entry-level rifle and then maybe build one up later if I really catch the fever, while leaving this as a varmint rifle.
There's my thoughts, application and reasoning - Shoot holes through it - Fire away with feedback! Let me know if I am way off base here. If so, suggest the kit you would use as a solution.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.
Cheers,
Kyle
