My name is Sophia and I am new to precision and long range shooting. With the exception of some deer hunting with my grandpa’s 7mm Remington, I have no experience with high-powered rifles. I just recently acquired a used Remington 700 Police in 308 Winchester from my local gun dealer.

To get to the point, I would like to buy some books on that topic. I searched the net and found three books that look interesting and informative to me.

They are:
Precision Shooting at 1000 Yards by Dave Brennan, Down Range: A Sniper’s Guide to Hitting Your Target by Christian W. Schoedlbauer, and Dead On: The Long-Range Marksman’s Guide to Extreme Accuracy by Tony M. Noblitt

The most appealing book to me so far is the Down Range book that is written by a German sniper. I could always order all three, but I wanted to ask you all beforehand if one of the books is not worth reading/buying, or if you may have a suggestion on a “definitely need to read book”.

I appreciate your help.

Happy shooting,
Sophia

Hello Sophia.

While there are many books on shooting there is always this website. I am willing to bet that some of the same information within those books is available to you for free on here.

Check out as many sections as you can, and use the search box to the right as often as you can.

Enjoy, and welcome to the Hide.

Have a good one.

Re: Advice Needed on Precision Rifle Shooting Book

I don't know the prices of these books, but you may want to look into the snipershide online training or riflesonly dvds instead.
I think it would be much more beneficial to actually see techniques and fundamentals than to read them from a book (not saying the books aren't any good, but usually visual instruction is picked up faster by a student).
some of the snipershide training used to be on the youtube site, so I would check that out also to see if you like it before signing up. Money well spent, IMO.

Re: Advice Needed on Precision Rifle Shooting Book

Look for Bryan Litz's book titled, "Accuracy and Precision For Long Range Shooting, A Practical Guide for Riflemen".

It's money well spend. I bought it during its promotion when it was not yet published so I got a small discount. The product code on the back cover shows it to be priced $34.95.

Welcome to the Hide.

Re: Advice Needed on Precision Rifle Shooting Book

Im pretty new to this activity and have been working on improving my precision when shooting from the prone position. I have found the "Fundamentals" DVD from Rifles Only very useful in teaching me proper prone shooting technique. - Todd

Re: Advice Needed on Precision Rifle Shooting Book

I have the sniper hides training book on my ipad that isnt to bad.

Books are a good refrence but ideally you need to find yourself someone to help teach you or if you can afford it look into one of the many decent training schools out there. The problem with teaching yourself from a book is that you can end up engraining bad habbits. I am not saying you cant do it but a school would be a great option or at least an experinced shooter to help you out.

Re: Advice Needed on Precision Rifle Shooting Book

+1 on the Litz books. His two books can be found here:

http://www.appliedballisticsllc.com/

His books give you the "why" to understand why something happens down range. Knowing that stuff is a huge advantage, as you will be able to understand what is really valuable - be it a piece of equipment, type of bullet, shooting position, etc.

Miss Sophia Welcome to Snipershide!

I would like to recommend the Online Training offered here, Lowlight(Frank) is a Marine and Army trained Sniper, the videos he produces are excellent learning and training tools, some of the older videos have Jacob Bynum the owner\operator of Rifles Only teaching, while books are good, and all the books listed so far in this thread are good, the videos will show you exactly how to train, ways to reinforce good habits and ways to reduce bad ones, IMHO its money well spent, the downside to the videos the techniques are geared toward Precision Rifle Shooting(Sniping) and not other venues like NRA F-Class or Benchrest.

I also recommend you complete your profile and list where you live, somebody here lives close and will help you get started, I do realize that your a girl and meeting strange men off the internet is generally a very bad idea, but everybody needs shooting partners.
