What lenght cleaning rod should I go with for a AE MK II 20" barrel? I will also be using a rod/bore guide so I know that adds a few inches. Any brands better than others ie. Dewey, Tipton?

As far as cleaning the barrel. I prefer to only use a jag and patches. Is it okay to run a jag through the barrel, breech to muzzle and exit the crown if you take off unscrew the jag prior to running the rod back through the crown? It seems the safest way to me, but I really don't know...?

Yes that is the correct way to do it without risking the chance of messing up your crown. Takes a little more time but you will know you haven't messed up your crown.

Deadly covered the length.

For brands I would stay with Dewey or Tipton. Established and well proven, they're going to be great choices.

I've never taken a jag off prior to bringing the rod back through the barrel. As long as you don't jam it back and bring it through carefully you should be OK. Also, what I've done in the past is to mark your cleaning rod where only about half of the jag comes out. That way when you're actually scrubbing the barrel with a patch, you do not need to allow the jag to completely exit the muzzle.

I would also purchase a Mike Lucas bore guide with the rod guide as well. That will help keep the rod in the center of the bore.

Mike told me that most people use a Dewey coated rod and he recommended a 40" for my application. I bought it from Midway and have had no problems whatsoever.

Re: AE MKII 20" proper size cleaning rod?

I use a Pro Shot 42" rod on my AW (26" barrel, non-folding stock) - it is the one from Sinclairs with the narrow handle. I think it is their own make? Plenty of clearance through the barrel/muzzle brake without getting hung up on the stock.

I used to find my Bore-stix was pretty useless on the AW (there was not enogh clearance of the top of the stock to get the handle over without bending the rod)

FWIW I'd suggest going as long as possible if you have a fixed stock

I always unscrew the jag before running the rod back through the bore.

+100 on Mike's bore guides - replaced my alu AW guide and now have one of Mikes' guides for all my rifles.

I have the above AI kit and it works well. The rod is quite bendy but it is good. AI bore guide too.

Can you confirm if all/most jags work with the Parker-Hale rod should i need replacements or is it AI specific ? Just read something a while back which i believe suggested most jags/brushes don't fit the PH rod ?
