What's the best way to get rid of rust in a hurry? I went on a camp/hunt trip this weekend, and had my rifle in a hard case. Apparently a severe weather change has adverse effects on polyfoam liners of hard cases and the blued steel of a rifle. I went hunting Friday, came back to camp that evening, put my gun in the case, and went to bed. (temps around 50F) Woke up to rain and shit Saturday, with temps in the 30's. Rain didn't stop all day, came home. Today, get my rifle out to discover the trigger guard, bolt handle, mag well/mag and barrel are RUSTY! I have usually used a rag with gun oil to remove the rust on my other rifles, however, some spots seem deeper than others. Oil and rag, or should I try something different? Any help?

I use #0000 steel wool with some cleaner. Never hurt the blueing. You can usually find fine steel wool like that in a woodworking shop. I used blue wonder gun cleaner because it says it gets rust off but honestly I think any oil or cleaner would work fine. I'm pretty sure the tube of cleaner is where I learned to use steel wool.

Is it a pretty hunting rifle? If not you might as well send it out for a bake on finish. Most of them look great and take rust out of the equation. To help what you have there the steel wool and oil/cleaner works like a champ.

Ok bear with me here.
Someone told me this a long time ago and i thought they were full of shit...until i tried it.

Get one of those stainless steel scouring pads used to scrub dishes. The ones that look like a wad of silver drillings.

you can use it dry or with some lube. My Dad found a .58 caliber navy arms muzzleloader sitting in a dirt floor basement of a friend of his. Got it for a few bucks..literally. It was covered in rust, couldn't even read the stamping on the barrell

I scrubbed the shit out of the rust with one of those babys and the blueing looks like new. Even the case hardening on the lock looks like new. It didn't leave a scratch.
