AI AE built in butt spike usage

I recently acquired an AI AE MK II that came with a factory installed butt spike:

So far, I can only rotate the main/coarse thread. How do I engage the smaller/fine thread to extend it further, or is that all there is to it?
Also, can the butt spike be removed if desired? Will it be possible to retrofit the stock with regular skins and use the Accushot monopod?

Thanks!

Re: AI AE built in butt spike usage

You buttspike looks to be stuck. The center washer is the lock to deploy the fast adjust, just pull down on the center piece. If you want to remove it remove the cheekpiece and drive the rollpin out of the top. A spring, spring cup will come out and then you will be able to remove the spike, becarefull not to lose the 3 ballbearings on the spike these act as the indent lock for the spike. Once that is done the fine adjust need to be removed just by unthreafing it.

Pull down on the big round knob just above the base to extend the spring loaded spike. Deploy the spike to the desired length then let go of the knob to lock it into the nearest detent.

Rotate the large knurled knob for fine tuneing.

That is one of the very few custom built Ae's that exist with a factory butt spike and we have no plans to do it again so you have a very unique AE there.

Tom,

Thank you for the info. Should I want to get different skins, can AI cut the butt stock skin to fit the butt spike if I provide the new skin?
