AI mark III 308, can it go to 6.5 saum .

So I have a 308 and was going to rebarrel it to 260. I have a 260 and it kicks the 308 ass. I then started reading about gaps hunter and was wondering what if possible to convert that rifle to the 6.5 saum.

You would need a magnum bolt face to run a 6.5 SAUM.

I dont know if there are any replacement bolts for a AI with a magnum bolt in a short action.

I would think that a smith could open up your existing bolt but you would be left with a permanent modification.

I am sure there are others on this thread that could answer your question much better than I.

Good luck.

Just throwing this out. Not familiar with the action in question. But

Built a 375 ruger on a rem 700 that started as a 270. Smith just opened the bolt face. Which did screw up extractor. Fix was just to install a badger extractor. 500 rounds or so through the gun. No issues. Opening a bolt face is pretty simple for a Smith

Edit. Just saw above, Daves comment. Must be something different about the ai action

Thanks, Dave.

Was it opening of the 308 bolt face that can't be done, or was it a whole replacement bolt that can't be done?

Yea that also. 3 lug vs. 6 lug. There's just not a work around.

I should know this but I don't. Anyone with an AT, is it a 3 lug or 6 lug bolt? If it's 6 lug there may be hope when the magnum AT's come out.

Dave, AT is 6 lug.

Another issue I see with opening up the bolt face or having a bolt head made is that there won't be much material left on the bolt at all. The bolt really needs to be a larger diameter for a magnum bolt face.
