a friend wanted to loose some weight off of his aics 2.0 and asked if i could help out. since it is aluminum, there really isn't much weight to be saved but i did what i could. personally, i wouldn't do this to mine as i have no idea if the strength has been compromised but i think it will be fine.

finished skeletonizing the front section. never mind my contaminated coolant

i also skeletonized the magwell and removed a bit of material on the bottom of the chassis in front of the magwell.

if it breaks, i guess we'll know it wasn't such a good idea after all

. i really wish i had a scale accurate enough to get a good before and after weight. i doubt it saved more than a few ounces. i think it looks kind of cool though.

Hey every little bit helps.

I had a friend like you back in the early 80's when I raced AMA Superbikes. A little here and a little there and we trimmed 136 lbs off a Honda 750F to make 390 lb. wet weight.

Looks like you took an intelligent (conservative) approach. I've seen people get seriously carried away with the "weight reduction" thing.

The only sad thing is, the aics won't go faster cuz it's lighter.

Is that a Sierra Nevada cap? Drinking & Driving again?

Sorry. Trying to be funny. Driving... machining...

Just a joke. Moving on

Re: aics 2.0 on a diet

I had a gunsmith tell me one time (in regards to a hunting rifle) that if a few ounces would ruin a hunting trip, perhaps it isn't the rifle. A few push-ups in the evenings might be a more practical...but hey, it's got that CDI factor!

i was trying to figure out if you knew me in my youth by that comment

i have a hard enough time not making mistakes when machining sober. i'm not about to try it while drinking.

some times we do things just because we can, even if the result has minimal benefit.

Re: aics 2.0 on a diet

It would be a while before I had the balls to cut on a 2.0 but I'm digging the machining job. With the triangle design would be about the best cut I would think and still is 1 of a kind to give it that WOW factor.

No, I'm not a ghost from your past

Ditto! Makes me wish I had taken metal shop instead of wood shop in high school.

Your local UPS or USPS should have a very accurate scale, perhaps if you aske nicely/bought some packaging supplies?

i haven't heard anything on it yet. i am pretty sure he said he is having his rifle rebarreled so i don't think it has been used yet.

I have gone away from the AI chassis due to the weight (except on AI AWSM ;)), even though it is my favorite stock. If you get a chance to weigh it, I would appreciate it.

Re: aics 2.0 on a diet

i would still like to see a weight comparison between a stock aics 1.5 and a mcm a3/4/5 with adjustable cheek piece, spacer length of pull, badger bottom metal and after being bedded.

again, i don't have a scale but after handling both of them the other day, i honestly don't think the mcm is all that much lighter. a scale would tell the real story though.

Re: aics 2.0 on a diet

Well it still looks cool. Since it has been awhile, has he had a chance to wring it out? The triangle is the strongest design from an engineering standpoint. Not only are you using the right shape you added strength by using huge radius’s in you triangles. I'm certain you did not hurt strength in any practical uses for that stock.

Re: aics 2.0 on a diet

the owner asked about having another one done a while back but he never got it to me. i am assuming that it has been holding up.

i do like triangles and nodes and try to use a nice radius on any part that will see stress. you are probably right about not compromising the strength of the stock. i am almost thinking about doing a couple of my aics's now.

Excellent observation by the gunsmith.

Re: aics 2.0 on a diet

I got a 1.5 or two that I would do that and more in a heartbeat. I get pissed each and every time I pick the rifle up and know when its is in an McM w/surgeon dbm it weighs two lbs less.

How much?

Did you re-coat the aluminum? I'm asking because I wonder if the exposed aluminum has any potential to oxdize and weaken in that respect?

Thanks

the owner does cerecoat so i have a feeling he probably refinished it. even bare, i doubt the surface oxidation on the aluminum would weaken it in our lifetime.

Re: aics 2.0 on a diet

Thanks for the pics and the posts.

I wish i had a machine shop or even some machines to do some fun projects.

Oh well, i guess i will have to sit and watch from the bleachers for a while yet.
