I just picked up an AR-15 and am looking for a red dot. I've narrowed it down to an Aimpoint because I've read my good things about its battery consumption. The hard part is which one should I get? Is there any advantage of one model vs the other? What about the 2 vs 4 moa dot?

I'm new to the AR world, it is my first one.

Re: aimpoint recommendations?

I have had 2 comp m4's and one m2, both were awesome, but I personally like m4.. I just like the 2 moa dot.. Not that it's used for shooting little bitty groups but the smaller dot allows for a little more precision if that's what your looking for.. I want to get my hands on the T1 2moa when my budget allows for it.

Re: aimpoint recommendations?

If you're looking for battery life, a CompM4 is certainly the way to go. They claim over 8 years of operation on a single AA battery.

You can make the 2MOA dot larger by increasing the intensity.

They're also one of the most durable sights available, and are a combat proven design.

I use one on my carbine.

Re: aimpoint recommendations?

I have a CompM4 also and it is very nice. Long battery life, but I want to get a micro T1/H1 in the future. Does everything the big ones do at half the weight. Battery life does drop to only 5 years though.. sarcasm implied. I also prefer a 2MOA dot but the 4MOA would be fine if you can get a good deal on one. Keep your eye on the Optics for sale section. Lots of guys selling their 4MOA's to get 2MOA's.

Re: aimpoint recommendations?

I just picked one up. Got an H-1 4MOA from LaRue with the LT660. I did ask but they didn't have any 2MOA in stock and I have a course next weekend that I wanted to use it at, but I don't regret going with the 4MOA at all. Tried it out this weekend and I'm very pleased. Also very happy I went with the lower 1/3 cowitness mount rather than the true cowitness.

Re: aimpoint recommendations?

I've got M2's ML2's Comp C's and the T1. 4MOA on all of them, but only because that was the only available option when they were bought.

I've used 2MOA and it's quite usable even in fast up close shooting.

Personally if I was to only own 1 aimpoint on a small carbine it would be the T1 with a 2MOA dot. T1 is light and the field of view isn't as bad as one would think. Actually it seems close to the M2 and M3. And it has less stuff around it's exterior to block the view of the user.

Re: aimpoint recommendations?

I couldnt be happier with my T1 2moa. Cant believe I waited so long to try it.

Great optic. Compact, light, built like a tank and has a very precise dot. Best RDS I have tried. I think it has found a permanent home on my M4 with fixed front sight and rear KAC 2-600 meter flip up.

Re: aimpoint recommendations?

I'm using an ITL MARs with a 1MOA red dot and it works for me. I also have a Docter MRD with a 7MOA red dot that is mounted on top of a SpecterDR for CQB. I wouldn't want to use the 1MOA RD for CQB or the 7MOA RD for long range shots, so it depends on what you want to do with the sight. A 4MOA Aimpoint might be a good compromise.
