Is it possible to ad a magnifier to my compm4 setup and accuratly get out to 400yds or so. I understand it depends on the shooter. Just trying to figure out if it is worth getting a magnifier or buying a variable optic.

Thanks

Re: Aimpoint with magnifier

I think you would be better off with a variable optic. By the time you add in the cost of the magnifier you are likely paying more than if you had just purchased a 1-4x scope. Unless you are going to be only shooting out to 50-100 yards go with the variable.

Re: Aimpoint with magnifier

Yes it is, just make sure you get the proper height mount. To co-witness the Aimpoint. But, like Tactical Tom said, you will be better off with a quality 1-4x scope. At least with a 1-4 with exposed turrets and a good reticle, you can dial out past 400 and hold or dial for wind.

Re: Aimpoint with magnifier

I also vote for a 1-4. I've never had great results with magnified Aimpoints. I find that a 1-4 is easier to shoot well, and with a reticle with some kind of graduations or with exposed turrets you'll have a much easier time out in the 300-400 range.

I've never looked through a decent 1-4 optic... makes me wonder, does it have eye relief issues? I know I can acquire the red dot on my aimpoint or eotech instantly... is that the case with a 1-4 scope as well?

Obviously with a 1-4 eye relief is more of an issue than with a red dot, but in practice I find it's not a problem. I've shot matches which are basically USPSA pistol matches that are shot with rifles using my NF 1-4 and I have no trouble finding the reticle on 1x. I've also shot classes where we shoot from awkward positions where the rifle isn't right up to our eyes and while eye relief is an issue, dialing down to 1x has never given me any trouble making good and quick hits.

Do the rules of your match allow multiple optics for the division you want to shoot in?

Re: Aimpoint with magnifier

I have tried a few different magnifiers/mounts behind the compm4. I have found that you must have the two in near perfect alignment to have a clear sight picture. The EOTech is slightly more forgiving if the two are not in perfect alignment. This is not true with an Aimpoint. The tube style design and ARD will severely restrict the view if not mounted precisely.
I would go with the Vortex Viper PST 1-4. Depending on what magnifier you go with, it might about the same price.

Re: Aimpoint with magnifier

There is definitely a role for a non-magnifed red dot with a magnifier that can flip to the side. It doesn't matter for non-moving targets shooting, but definitely matters for moving targets.

Variable mag scopes have parallax and most even at low mag require the same cheek and eye placement/relief to shoot consistently. When you switch to weak side shooting, awkward positions, shooting from behind barriers, etc...the aiming point shifts with variable mag tube scopes. True 1x red dots excel, since your aiming point does not depend on eye/cheek placement and at what angle you are looking through the scope.

I agree that the magnifier has to be cowitnessed with the red dot and at the appropriate eye relief.

For a CQB to 500 yd semi-auto rifle setup for fast moving Targets and awkward shooting positions, as described above...it's hard to beat a 1x red dot with flip magnifier...or you can consider a Elcan Specter DR.

For bench and prone shooting at longer distances or non-moving targets, go with a variable mag tube scope.
