Are most of the thermals/IR optics safe for air rifle use? May seem like a strange questions but I couldn't find a lot of information out there concerning their joint use and I know an air rifle can wreck a standard optic. Thoughts from the experts?
I would avoid it at all costs to be honest. The reverse recoil is just bad news. Air rifles shred daytime optics, so much to where they even make a special type you have to purchase, and they do so, because there is enough market for it. I'm pretty sure that there isn't a NV scope manufacturer that would cover the warranty from any damage done from mounting on an air rifle, and I doubt anyone has made an optic specifically to cater to the air rifle crowd.
I've done it. Several hundred rounds so far through my .177 NPSS with a FLIR RS mounted up, 35mm and 60mm versions. Not a single glitch. First time I pulled the trigger with my PS-32 mounted (several years ago), the ribbon cable came off the Tau core and I lost video. Had it repaired and updated with the locking-bar fix, and it has worked great ever since.
I would avoid it...I've thrashed daytime optics on my .22 so I would be REALLY sketchy about putting something that expensive on it.
WITH THAT SAID
eric-TVNC "if you build it they will come" ;-) IF someone would make an air rifle "safe" NV setup, I would more than likely buy one of those than a standard setup. Out here in the Southwest, all the fun critters come out at night.
