    “We were pretty prepared,” Walsh said, of gathering items to last them for their planned trip to the Caribbean. However the two were not prepared for what happened next. Nearly two days into their venture, the couple’s boat capsized in a channel of water called John’s Pass.

    “We thought the channel was where we were going, but it wasn’t,” Walsh told the New York Post, telling the publication they were armed with GPS and paper navigation charts.

    Local boat captains say the sandbars often shift in John’s Pass, the Post reported.

    Walsh admitted she and her boyfriend, who used to drive for Uber, were “new to sailing.”

    Unless they didn't have any insurance their ins co is required to salvage the boat, they are either uninsured, dumb or trying to scam, my guess would be a combination of factors.

    Gofundme should be renamed Bail-me-out-from-the-consequences-of-my-stupidity 95% of the go fund me requests are like this. The last one was an acquaintance who just had a motorcycle accident and wanted to money to fix his face from the damage he got from not wearing a helmet. Years ago I was arguing the merits of helmets with him and he used the "let those who ride decide" line on me. I was temped to reply to his request with "let those who ride pay" fortunately my better judgment kicked in before I clicked send.

    so a pair of millennial hipsters decide to sell everything they own......quit their jobs because they are tired of working (man those 4 years of "work" must have been brutal)......and think it would be fun to "sail around the world" (even though neither of them know how to sail).....i mean hell, they didnt even buy the right boat, they want to sail the open ocean in a fucking bay-cruiser.

    they then sink their boat, and because they only have $90 (how were they going to buy food or supplies?)........they decide to go to the internet to help them out.

    and whats worse, people actually fucking donated to them!

    Give me 6 or 8 float bags and a HVLP compressor and I could have that boat back at the marina in a day for waaaay less than $10k.

    chances are, with them coming from the north, they tried to cut in too soon and hit the rocks on the maderia beach side.
    really pretty stupid as, again its a very big and very lit pass...
    you can run aground on sand bars at least a few hundred yards out, that why its so long and marked.
    but the sand wont sink you, the lime rock bolders will, so, they were where thay should not have been

    A lot of sailing couples are going to the web (patron) to fund their adventures. Some quite successfully, others not so much.

    the open ocean is very unforgiving ... there Darwin rules!

    Mike is absolutely correct. The markers run at least 1/2 mile out past the jetty.
    Sand bars do shift around but if you stay somewhat inside the markers it's no problem.

    I don't doubt they were also coming in during a heavy tide and got twisted sideways.
    That's bad news in a pass that was created by a hurricane....
