I've spent months searching for a new stock. I have a Howa Long action chambered in .338 Norma Magnum and I would like a stock with an adjustable cheek rest, adjustable length of pull (not as important), but most importantly a full block of aluminum to bed to. I'm not sure if this will make a difference versus aluminum pillars, any advice? Any body know where I can get a stock like this? I've seen them for the short action but not for the long action.

You could find a stock with all the features you want inletted for another action and see if Chad Dixon can fill it and re-inlet for your Howa. Check out his threads (C.Dixon). Awesome work.

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

If I get a stock that has an aluminum block, won't the action screws need to line up? Do the action screws of a Howa and Remington long action line up?

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

Bedding blocks are good but not the end all and be all not every factory action is identical because of machining tolerances and not every bedding block is the same again machining tollerances I had a Hs stock that for the whole bedding block only had 2 points of contact the best way to bed an action is devcon IMO you just need a composite stock or a wood stock as it won't stick to factory plastic synthetic stocks. As for stock choices I'm pretty sure McMillan will inlet a stock to any action and install pillars an a5 will suit your needs then all you have to do is bed it with devcon and your good to go and with devcon bedding you have a bedding that 100% matches your action and a bedding block will never match as well

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

I've done bedding before. I had a laminated stock on my .338 win mag with a factory sporter barrel and I installed a pillar and glass bedding kit from Score-Hi and it shrank my groups from 3-4 MOA to under 2 MOA. I'm still wondering though, why can't I glass bed a full block stock? Wouldn't that be more rigid and fit just as well as a fiber glass stock that has been pillar and glass bedded?

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

You can glass bed a full length block as I have with my Hs stocks as for being more rigid that is a grey area alot of composite stocks are very rigid anyway I know wild dog and I think manners are carbon fibre so they are very rigid in the stock and then using devcon you basically are making your bedding block with it and I think devcon ends up more rigid then aluminum anyway and I think full length bedding blocks can be a bit over rated at times and IMO their good if you can get one but your not really going to adversely affect accuracy by not having one and giving it a good quality glass bedding job I think full length bedding blocks are mainly used as a less labour intensive and more mass produced way to increase accuracy because all the top smiths will still glass bed a rifle with or without a bedding block

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

Do you know of anyone who has had success with the Hogue stocks? They are less than half the price of a Manners of McMillan. They don't have the "tactical" shape to them that the others have but they seem really high quality.

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

Thanks. Another thing I was wondering is if a synthetic stock with aluminum pillars and glass bedding is going to make a difference versus a laminated wood stock with aluminum pillars and glass bedding. Any experience?

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

The major thing with wooden stocks are they won't hold up to wet conditions. They can swell up and create uneven pressure throughout. HS, Manners, and MCM are all fiberglass not synthetic, B&C Tactical ones are too. You won't have to worry about aything with a fiberglass stock.

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

Hogue is ok but you can't glass bed so pillars are the best ull get with a hogue you can only glass bed McMillan, Hs, manners or any other fiberglass stock or composite stock but any plastic/synthetic stock like hogue or factory sps or weatherby/Howa stocks won't bed because the plastic their made from works like a release agent and the bedding compound just won't stick to it and just falls off but they can pillar bed them because they cast the pillars into the plastic when it in moulded so you can buy a hogue but you can't accurize it to the same extent as the more expensive stocks me personally I would go a McMillan as it has all the features you want

Re: Alluminum Bedding Block Stock for Howa Long Action

So, have you actually seen 1st or 2nd hand a laminated rifle stock getting soaked? I've read some old guys (like Chuck Hawk), saying that they've never seen a laminated stock get affected by moisture in the environment. They don't go diving with the stocks, they are talking about hunting in the rain. (edited for a typo)
