I finally got my XCR tactical, and I have wanted to put a laminate wood thumbhole on it for a while, and the one that is advertised at Stocky's comes with an aluminum bedding block, which they say is a very nice setup and works well in regards to accuracy. However, another guy said don't use the aluminum, only use glass or pillars. I am sure that I can find the stock without the aluminum block, (which would also be much cheaper) and have someone bed it themselves. What route do you recommend and why?

Re: Aluminum bed in Laminate stock? Bad Choice?

I'm no expert and I don't know what context that the "don't use aluminum bedding" quote was taken from. However, I can tell you that arguably one of the best aftermarket stocks in production today (AICS) uses a full length aluminum bedding block and does not need any other form of bedding. (although some people do glass bed them and this practice has produced some positive results)
Furthermore, I believe that rifle comes in a B&C stock that has an aluminum bedding block.

Bottom line: Don't be turned off from the stock by the aluminum bedding block. It will provide extra durability and prevent the front of the stock from flexing. Also, because it is an aluminum bedding block, you do not need to pillar bed it. Although glass bedding could still be beneficial.

The aluminum bedding blocks are useful and can improve accuracy. I have however skim bedded one of my HS Precision stocks with the aluminum bedding block to help center the barrel in the barrel channel.
