just thought i'd share....

did a test awhile back on the aguila golden eagle match rifle (black box)ammo test aguila golden eagle match rifle, which came close to the performance of sk match and wolf for more than half the price ($27.60), so i was interested in trying the "target" (blue box) @ $28.50. thought maybe the two kinds of ammo have the same relationship to each other as wolf match + match extra has. so since santa brought me a brick for christmas, did a little trigger time today....results....

shot through a savage mkii, 20" bull barrel, bipod, rear bag.
35 degrees, slight to a 7mph wind(changing from 2:00 to 10:00), sunny. unfortunately left my crony "on" the last time i used it (brain fart=dead battery), so no fps data, sounds "sub sonic". shot 5 round groups. measured "MG" major group (measurement without obvious flyers), "EG" extended (measurement with obvious flyers). target was 1" circle. also shot 1 group with aguila g.e. match rifle, and 1 group with sk match, for comparison.

opened the brick and seperated in weighed lots, below shows how many rounds per lot, per this brick...

50.7 21 rnds
50.8 50 rnds
50.9 60 rnds
51.0 90 rnds
51.1 89 rnds
51.2 91 rnds
51.3 44 rnds
51.4 17 rnds
51.5 8 rnds
51.6 16 rnds

by looking at the amount of rounds in the 51.0 through 51.2, leads me to believe this was their objective produce ammo to those parameters.
there were 7 above and 7 below, used them as sighters/foulers.

at 50 yards, started with a "dirty" barrel, used 50.8 through 51.3 weight lots, 10x 5rnd groups. looking at the photos, you may or may not want to call them flyers.

50.8 1" mg, 1.5" eg, 1 flyer
50.9 .75" mg, 1" eg, 1 "flyer" (if you want to call it that)
51.0 -1" mg, -1" eg, 0 flyer
51.1 .25" mg, -1" eg, 1 flyer
51.2 -.75" mg, .75" eg, 1 "flyer" (if you want to call it that)
51.3 -.5" mg, .5 eg, 1 "flyer" (if you want to call it that)

aguila golden eagle match rifle,
51.0 .75" mg, .75" eg, 1 "flyer" (if you want to call it that)

sk match
51.3 -.5" mg, -.75 eg, 1 "flyer" (if you want to call it that)

aguilatarget50yddb2.jpg

100 yard "clean barrel" (swabbed after each group)

50.8 1.75" mg, 3.25" eg, 1 flyer (nasty one)
50.9 1.25" mg, 1.75" eg, 1 flyer
51.0 1.75" mg, 2.25" eg, 2 flyers
51.1 1.5" mg, 2.25" eg, 1 flyer
51.2 1.5" mg, 2" eg, 1 flyer
51.3 1" mg, 2.25 eg, 2 flyers

aguila golden eagle match rifle,
51.0 -1" mg, 1.5" eg, 2 flyers (remeasured mg, should be -1" in photo note)

sk match
51.3 1.25" mg, 1.25" eg, 1 "flyer" (if you want to call it that)

100 yard dirty barrel (not swabbed at all). this ammo seems to like to be shot out of a dirty barrel as evident by the photos, the aguila and sk match seems less effected, more consistant out of clean or dirty barrel.

50.8 1" mg, 1.75" eg, 1 flyer
50.9 .75" mg, 1.50" eg, 1 flyer (nasty one, too bad)
51.0 1" mg, -1.75" eg, 2 flyers
51.1 -1.25" mg, 1.5" eg, 1 flyer
51.2 1.25" mg, -1.5" eg, 1 flyer
51.3 -1.50" mg, 2.25" eg, 1 flyers (remeasured mg, should be 2.25" in photo note)

aguila golden eagle match rifle,
51.0 -1.25" mg, 1.75" eg, 1 flyers

sk match
51.3 -1.25" mg, -1.50" eg, 1 flyer

other than 2 really nasty flyers (which opened results to 3.25"), most groups at 100 yards using a clean barrel and counting flyers were 2.25" or less, 1.75" not counting flyers.

most groups at 100 yards using a dirty barrel and counting 1 nasty flyer was 2.25" or less (generally were 1.75" or less). without counting flyers, most groups were under 1.5".

even though some nice groups were produced by the aguila "target" (advertised to be aguila's most accurate ammo), it seems dependant on a dirty barrel to perform optimumly as POI and group size changes dramtically between clean and dirty barrels. the "target" appears to be bet by both aguila "match rifle" (which cost less than the "target") and of course by the sk "match". keep in mind the sk or wolf brands are twice the price.

however for the price of the aguila "target" ($28.50), it is still a nice affordable seemingly accurate ammo. however i do like the more consistancy of the aguila "match rifle" ($27.60) and sk "match" ($65.00) over both distances, both clean and dirty barrels.

there were also 2 misfires with the aguila "target". it also leaves a very dirty "sooty black" residue in barrel, the aguila "match rifle" shot cleaner, with the sk "match" being the cleanest. the sk POI was also higher than the other two, but the drop from 50 to 100 was the same at 8.3".

Re: AMMO TEST - Aguila Golden Eagle "Target"

I have tried the Golden Eagle Target and thought it performed alright. The Eley Sport I like so well out performed it, but not by much in my rifle, (Savage MK II-FVT).

I think weighing each round is a big plus even though I don't do that myself, but I may start just to see what results I get.

On the side of one of the empty 50 count boxes of the Golden Eagle Target I have written - 1100 FPS. I believe I got that information over on Midway USA when they were listing the 'FPS' of all the .22LR ammo they sell,,, though I'm not sure if they are still doing that with all of it?

When Spring rolls around I'll give the Golden Eagle Target another testing and see what happens from there, though as I said, if I remember correctly it wasn't to bad at all.

I have found that CCI Standard Velocity Target (blue box) ammo, at around $22 a brick, works very well in my accurized 10/22. Nickel/dime holes at 50yd from a rest. No weighing, nothing extraordinary. It's essentially indistinguishable from Fed GMM in my guns.

Locally. With all due respect, exactly where is something a few friends and I don't talk about very much. Nothing personal, but there are confidences involved. We protect the source.

Congrats - you're one more person that understands that every type of Aguila shoots like dog shit at 50 and 100 yards; 50 FT is OK though.

I've tested the CMP match, the purple and yellow box match, the silver and black box match - all dogshit at 50 yards on out.

The "flier??" notation - yep, that is Aguila. You get a mediocre group intermixed with some "where the F did THAT come from??" shots mixed in. Notice how the rounds feel when you seat them in the chamber. Out of one box the bullets feel like they are 3-4 different sizes. Have not measured any but I'm sure the OD is all over the place.

Have you messed with Federal 711B? That is the most consistent moderately priced match ammo I've ever shot. Eley Target (yellow box) several of us have had outstanding luck with the lots that came into the US in the past 6-8 weeks or so.

No problem, just much better pricing than I've found online or anywhere around here.

Re: AMMO TEST - Aguila Golden Eagle "Target"

Reviving this one from the dead... just found a brick for $30. Will be testing it out in my Savage mkII BVTS soon and will report. I have tried many different kinds of ammo with this rifle with poor results... best yet is 3" groups at 100 yards. Haven't tried anything fancy yet though.

I havent seen this thread before. First off thanks to TP as always for taking the time to share the info with us. Second, Greg is right. I have 3 bricks of this ammo now and love it. I know of several Savage rimfires that all like it and it performs very well in both of mine. Only thing is that damn inflation! Cheapest I can find mine is 22.99 a box

Re: AMMO TEST - Aguila Golden Eagle "Target"

thanks, the saga continued - i got a couple bricks of bad Aguila ammo:

http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=2274134

other than that mishap - the stuff shot fine and at a good price.

but now i can't afford to be F'n around, and since there was no word back from the manufacturer / distributor i just going to run cci blazer through one and wolf through the other. when the blazers are gone, wolf through both.
