Ammunition question for Tikka T3X Tac A1 - .308 vs 7.62 ammunition use??

Can you, is it safe to or not recommended to also shoot 7.62 NATO ammunition in my Tikka T3X Tac A1 rifle? When I called Beretta (in MD) and asked a tech there, he was adamant to say "no you can not and should not shoot 7.62 NATO through that rife". While I am sure there are just being cautious, does anyone have experience with this topic? Thanks in advance!

I shoot M80 for inside of 400yrds, cheaper to practice with, and 308 at distance or if I need a little more accuracy.
