Anneal before or after sizing?

Re: Anneal before or after sizing?

"...do you anneal, before or after you size the case?"

Yes. But only because it really makes no difference.

Re: Anneal before or after sizing?

B4. Cause I need to clean the neck inside and out after annealing. Then size and trim. Then Polish the inside of the neck and deburr. Then load and not do it again for 4 to 6 loadings. JMHO

At least that makes sense to me.
Annealing may alter your previous sizing work.</div></div>

I don't have an annealer yet but this makes sense to me also. Watch us both be wrong, but I doubt it. Sizing is one of the biggest contributors to work hardening so it doesn't make sense to resize first. You want to get the proper neck tension by annealing and getting them softer so they retain there shape if I understand the process correctly.

When they become work hardened, they become springy and don't retain there shape after resizing. After being squeezed down by the die, they spring back open a little when pulled back out of the die, giving you inconsistent neck tension. Especially less neck tension in varying degrees.

God I hope I'm not wrong or the more experienced (old guys) are going to eat me up.

Re: Anneal before or after sizing?

I aneal after sizing. The heat from the torch burns up the the carbon and graphite residue in the neck and would create more drag on the expander button. Doing it this way eliminates the need to lube the inside of the necks and cuts down on the need to trimm strechtched or lengthend necks. If you neck size only, it doesnt matter.

Re: Anneal before or after sizing?

If I anneal before I size, the necks are slightly smaller than if I size first, then anneal. Annealing first assures consistent neck tension in multiple ways.

Re: Anneal before or after sizing?

Annealing before or after sizing isn't a complex thing, both work and it makes no difference at all IF we tumble (as we should) after the annealing. Tumbling cleans up both the inside and outside quite nicely BEFORE any attempt to either resize OR reload.

Re: Anneal before or after sizing?

I have been tumbling, annealing, then sizing. I like having the case completely clean when annealing - it makes it easier for me to see when the neck reaches the right temp.

Its a little bit tricky when you first start out. My advice, do a lot of reading and make sure you have a solid understanding of the process involved.
