A question re the order you fired the rounds in. Did you fire all the 40.1 rounds then move on to the 40.5? Sometimes for a test like this I shot one round at each load weight, going up the weights, then let the rifle cool. Then I start at the highest load and work down the weights, then let the rifle cool.
What's the best way to shoot a test like this without cooking the barrel? I have a sporter barrel and usually the heat haze off the moderator is the limiting factor.

Thats basically what I did, shot starting at 40.1, then 40.5, 40.9. Taking at least a minute or 2 between shots. Walk away for several minutes after the first couple. Come back fire 41.3, etc etc in the first string is complete.
Walked downrange look at the target, look at buddies target, walk back. Just trying to kill time to give it as much time to cool. Then start over doing that same order again.

Shot at 100yds. Rem 700 20" barrel. 175gr SMKs over H4895. Id fire 2-3 rounds counting up, then walk away for 5-10 minutes, come back and fire the rest. Wash/rinse/repeat. 42.7 is book max.
I would load 3 - 3 shot groups at 41.5, 41.7, 41.9. Shoot each charge weight over the same target and see what they do. That or you can shoot them round robin again OCW style.
You have a pretty narrow node from 41.7 to 42.1 Although you may have pulled a shot on the 42.1 as your other two shots fell where they should have.
41.7 was a great group but what you have to determine is if 42.1 is on the edge of a scatter node in which case you need to favor 41.3 to 41.7 The targets after 42.1 would indicate its scattering after 42.1
How consistant was your brass, same headstamp ?
And what does wash rinse repeat mean, were you cleaning between shots ?
Do you mean 9 total, or 9 total of each weight for a total of 27 for consistency? Sorry, just the wording confused me a little.
Brass was all same head stamp. Measured and grouped into lots. Same with the bullets. I check the bearing length, and weight.
Honestly, once I decide on a powder charge I wont be so meticulous. Im just looking for most accurate "minute of man" round.

9 total so go shoot 1 group of 41.5, 41.7, 41.9 at the same target POA/POI. This will tell you how these three charge weights shoot togather. I like to do that three times
If I have good luck at 100 with the first group I shoot the next at 300 then at 600.
What your trying to do is find out if your charge weight changes by .2 either way you will still be in a node. Also any normal chages such as lots of powder, brass, primer, etc will have less impact on your load. I.E pressure tollerent load.

41.7 is centered good... next node should be at 42.9 grains, which isn't too far over max (not at all over max if you're looking at Hodgdon's IMR numbers). The H4895 is a pinch slower than IMR, so I think there's some discrepancy in Hodgdon's data there...

Another reason why I like this forum. I too am evaluating my last range session and this is the just the info I need to take it to the next level. Thanks Rprecision.
Any 3 of the 9 bullets fired at 41.3, 41.7, and 42.1 would make a decent group lol. So IMO it's hard to argue with picking 41.7gr and calling it a day. I don't think I'd bother worrying whether 41.6 would actually be the center of the node.
