Just curious if anyone shoots .308 with 10 twist 20" barrel out to 1000 yards??? Would love to see your rigs and results. What do you and your rifle prefer in THIS case, 155gr or 168gr??? Seems like a 20" barrel is not long enough for 175s though...
Thanks bunch.

A bit off topic, but I have a 16.5" with a takeoff factory barrel that I headspaced to the action. I just shot it today with 175g SMKs and it is well under one inch at 100yds. I do not know what the velocity is, but I put it together for a short/handy stick and it fills the bill.

My 19" rig shoots the 178 Amax out to 1k with no issues running at 2634.

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

Had a AIAE w 20in and it was a deer/yote dump-in fool any were from 100 to 1156. Mostly shoot 175s but it also loved 155 and 168s never tried the 208. You will be happy with her out to 1000 for sure and 20 in makes it a little nicer for tighter corders. Have a good one

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

Avoid the 168s for 1K. Try 155s or 175s. I like a SMK 175 in my 20" 1:10 twist with 43 grains of RL-15. 2728 FPS. 35moa drop at 1000.

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

I have a 20" Tango 51 and it loves 155g Scenar with 45g of varget with a 2.82 OAL. Using Lapua Brass and GM210m primers.

What are your barrel specs.? I have a factory 5r cut to 20" using that same load and I'm lucky to get 2556.

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

If you check some of the ballistics calculators (I prefer JBM), you'll find that there's a few different projectiles that will get you comfortably to 1,000. The Lapua 155 Scenars seem to do it best (at least according to my specs/conditions/altitude), but the 175 SMK and 208 Amax aren't far behind.

The limiting factor at that distance is really the optic. If you're not using a canted base, you would be pushing the internal adjustment limit. You need ROUGHLY 30-35MOA so keep that in mind.

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

This year's Fall ASC Match was shot with all 20" .308 FNH SPRs. We used CorBon 175gr SMK at about 2550 fps. Twenty seven shooters were putting regular hits onto 1200 yard targets at 3700 feet above sea level. It was a real eye-opener for almost everyone there.

Semper Fidelis,

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

Yes, I have heard and not once that 168 grainers don't do as well as 155s and 175s to 1000 yards. Why? Who knows. But I find it hard to believe that none of these are capable. I guess I'll just have to buy one of each and see for myself...

Just shoot 175s. You're trying to reinvent the wheel with factory ammunition... and your theories are fucked. Good luck.

yeah gotta be a typo, i cant get more than 2560.. from my 18" with 175s

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

Don't think it is a typo. I'm getting 2725 out of my 20" AE with 44.7 RL-15 and 178 amax.
Was also getting 2750 out of a 20" Rock barrel using 44.5 RL-15 and 178 amax.

Hope this helps,

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

I put 45.0 Varget and SMK 175's through my Tac Ops 20" out to 1000 with used FGM168 brass. I had nice consistent x ring hits at 800. However, reading the wind from 800 to 1000 is still challenging me. No problem keeping the pointy end out front though.

I did use 44.0 Varget and was fine in the summer but when the weather dropped to the 30's-40's the rounds petered out after 900 and came in sideways at 1000 in November.

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

All loadings with the same bullet are going to perform bout the same because the ballistics of The 168smk round don't change based on the brand...... The 175smk is a different bullet and has better ballistics out past 800yrds. The "why" is very simple and well documented......in a nutshell, it's the ballistic coefficient....

Re: Any .308 Shooters with 20" Barrel Here?

Respectfully I will have to disagree, SMK 168 have a different degree boat tail, they were designed for 300 yard competitions and do not perform well after 700-750 yds (exception to that is at high elevation), other 168 gr bullets behave differently.

" The Sierra 168 HPBR MK suffers from dynamic instability problems at long range due to its 12-13 degree boat tail. Most other Sierra L-R MK’s have about 9 degree boat tails. The Berger 168 VLD has a 8.5 degree BT and does not suffer from the problems the Sierra 168 has as it approaches trans-sonic speeds.

BTW, the Berger 155.5 has a G1 BC of 0.464 and a G7 BC of 0.237. The Berger 168 VLD has a G1 of 0.0.473 and a G7 of 0.0.242. That may make you think about using the 155.5 grain instead of the 168VLD."

Same here, I use 155's and can get about 2750fps or 175 at around 2550fps. The 168's only gave me about 25-50fps over the 175's using varget powder. Both 155 and 175 grain bullets will reach 1k and remain consistent even though they may be sub-sonic at times, depending on the weather. But with the slower velocities of the factory barrel I tend to shoot more at 800 and under, where the 308 lives.
