Getting close to buying one of these new from the source. Wondering how come I rarely see any in classifieds or read about them in the forums?

Join contest SubscribeHad 2 GAP builds that were essentially tweaked Rocks. One had a 20" LW and other one was in a Manners MCST. They just seemed like pigs. Sold both and have a Thunder Ranch in 6.5x47 with v2 action instead.
Just my 2c: MCS-T instead HTG is a must. M40 contour just real heavy, hell even GAP#6 is fairly heavy. Deviant instead of R700 is worth the $.
Love the TR, but if I did it again after owning these 3 rifles, I would spec the build even lighter as:
- GAP Templar V2 action (comes standard with medium firing pin)
- Manners MCS-TA Elite shell (I would pay the difference to save 3oz for LRI ULTACH 2.4)
- APA RTG DBM vs Mini-chassis
- Bartlein RV/Sendero (if chasing weight, then Proof Sendero)
This is an interesting question. In short, the features of the rock were very typical of rifles of that era. Essentially a fluted barrel m40a1. If you were walking a range in the late 90's and early 2000's, every tactical rifle on the line looked like this. It was a pattern...everyone's idea of what a "sniper" rifle should look like. Its nearly identical to GA's base rifle, but with BO bottom metal and fluting.
Today, the pattern rifle would have an A5 or Manners equivalent stock, or a chassis system, 6.5mm of some flavor, a somewhat lighter contour barrel, no fluting, a detach mag system, a muzzle brake, and if you had some extra coin, a remclone action. A much better rifle, for not much more money.
My second custom rifle was a GA built gun, and I went bananas with it. It was awesome! Never regretted it, and the only step up FOR ME, was an AIAW. Don't buy the Rock. Youre a few hundred bucks away from bananas, and the last rifle you'll ever need.
