The only blue part of VA :(
i know a magnet will tell me steel from alum, but isn't some stainless non-magnetic?

before anyone suggests it.... i would love to ask the manufacturer...

but try asking Ares Defense about anything. Plus, I don't think they even make cans anymore.

anyhow, i've never cleaned mine. its sealed and heavy but works pretty good. i'd love to dip it in something to at least take a layer of crap out. but i dont want to melt it

Use brass and try to scratch it, SS wont but aluminum will.

Joking

whats it weight? are you looking for just SS or Alum or the specific type?

Im trying to think of ways to determine other than comparing size and weight

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

Problem you will have is telling what the baffles are made of. Since its sealed, you can determine the outer material by weight and magnetism, but you still won't know what the baffles are constructed of. I believe ARES Defense in Melbourne, FL is who you are talking about. If so they are still in business and there number is (321)242-8410.

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

yeah, i know they're around. they're just not helpful. i've called and emailed. nobody seems to even know they ever made cans. i got it a decade ago when they were based out of Va.

i would think that weighing would give skewed results since its filled with crap from shooting now. but maybe not that skewed?

anyhow, i can slip one of those "extend a magnets" pointer things in from the threaded end and touch the first set of baffles. i would think that would give me some idea.

does the vinegar H202 trick cause problems with just Al or will it eat regular steel too. (ie, not stainless)

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

X-Ray Diffraction...haha j/k whether of not the steel is magnetic depends on how much nickel is in it. There are four main ways to easily (cheaply) distinguish metals. Magnetic, acid test, hardness, and sparking. As discussed its hard to tell if you have a non-magnetic alloy, and I doubt you want to dip it in acid, or drag it behind a car and see if it sparks lol. I would try scratching it in an obscure area. Al is more dull and SS is very shiny and bright.

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

If it's a centerfire rifle caliber it's MOST LIKELY not aluminium but may have Titanium in it. "The dip" will not eat steels but Al and TI it will. If it's a pistol can and it feels pretty light I woulndn't try it. The manufacturer may or may not tell what it's made out of; so will, some won't.

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

There's a product called "Slip2000" that Brownells sells. It does a fantastic job cleaning suppressors, especially 22RF cans and it is AL safe for sure.

If you're just curious of the material for cleaning purposes the Slip2k will be safe for steel, SS, AL and the Ti cans. I doubt it's a Ti can from the date of MFG and your statement that it's beefy, but I would not be surprised to hear that it's some breed of SS.

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

mostly just curious of the metal cause i wanted to dip it into the lead remover gunk (made from peroxide and vinegar) but didnt want to eat up the baffles.

whatever it is, i guarantee it isnt titanium.

does the slip2000 take out lead too or just carbon

OH! FYI, its a 22lr can.

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

took some measurements and weighed the can today.

1'' diameter apprx 7'' long, appears to have 4 baffles.
weight 8oz on kitchen scale

tube is magnetic, i THINK the baffles were too but it was really hard to tell as my little magnet kept getting pulled into the tube (more metal to be magnetic i assume)

tube and endcaps def ferrous metal. internals... i can assume based on the weight but still unsure.

I'm gonna try to soak it in the mineral spirits ATF fluid since i have both on hand. anyone have any idea how difficult it would be to soda blast a sealed can... would it even be possible... i would think the soda would fill up the can pretty quick.

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

It would help if you told us what make and model of can it is. Some of us remember ares products from the dark ages. If it is aluminum or contains aluminum it will disappear in the vinegar/peroxide solution. Plain steel will pit pretty badly and even stainless may show some corrosion from the solution. Soda blasting a sealed can will probably not work very well. The baffles were designed to create turbulence and will keep the soda from really getting where you need it....as you noted it will fill the can pretty quick and not do much. If you think there is any aluminum in it don't risk the vinegar solution. The Slip 2000 sounds like a better idea.

Which Slip2000 product are you referring to?

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

You know, you could always dip it and if it gets REAL loud you know the guts were AL.

Seriously, you could always dip it and if it does eat it you can send it out and have it made into a modern take apart with steel baffles. Just a thought.

Re: any idea how to tell what your can is made from?

i've thought about that. and if it were free i'd be all about it.

having to pay more than i have into it to have it rebuilt.... not so interested.

perhaps if it ever quits being quiet i'll give that a go.
