Well I've wondered for some time on either to get a 50 BMG or a 338 Lapua for my next gun. Well one of the gun shops here had a range day and had booth out to shoot. For me the 338 was much funner to shoot so that helped he with the choice in caliber. But they had all the 338 lapua's that savage makes my question is what is and how much of a difference in the 110 BA is there with the aluminium stock and the standard other than weight and $500. I have to really think about this because here in Idaho max weight of your rifle can be for hunting is 16 lbs. I don't plan on using it for hunting I just like to have that option just in case I might need it.

Re: Any Savage Owners

i own a savage 110BA but in the .300win mag, the rifle shoots very well. so far i have stretched it out to 1000yds. with pretty good success.

only issue is that i have heard about alot of guys having major problems with the 110BA in .338lm.

first is extraction problems big time i see this problem all the time.

second is fliers from the gun on the 3rd or 4th shot.

these problems have come up alot latley and there are a few different threads on this forum about these problems.

on a good note my rifle has performed great with no issues at all with 140 rounds down the tube with no malfunctions. had a few issues with accuracy but that was the ammo i was shooting. when i switched to a heavier bullet it fixed the issue.

good luck and good shooting

Re: Any Savage Owners

I would buy the 338 w/ the hs stock, sell the HS for $200-$300, combine it with the money you saved over the BA... And you've got $700-$800 for a stock.

Adjustable Mcmillan, manners, mcree chassis, you're close to an xlr.

This can help you save weight and get great accuracy, consistency, comfort, and just overall performance.

Something to consider anyways, good luck

TOPGuN050 ... Odd that you mentioned extraction problems in your thread with the 110BA in 338lm. We were at Rayners and a fella (name eludes me) had a new Savage 338 which shot very well once he got the scope straightened out and got a lot of 1st round hits even out to 900 yards while getting some settings. But..... the more he shot, the more problems he had with the factory rounds extracting. Luckily he had a long cleaning rod with him and was able to knock out about every 3rd one. It looked like the extractor was barely grasping the rim and was being pulled over it leaving a mark on the rim. The extractor looks to be the same size as the ones in our Model 11s. Might be something they need to look into. Otherwise the gun shot very well and didn't seem to have much recoil compared to the cartridge being fired.

Re: Any Savage Owners

I have one of the 111's in 338LM that somehow outshoots my buddy's 110 easily. I've definitely had to do some work on mine to get the bugs out, but I'm pretty glad I didn't spend the extra $$ for the 110 so far.
About some of the issues you've read about- use lapua brass- period. Make sure everything is torqued right, loctite the things that need loctite, make sure your rail is mounted correctly (mine had an issue), and put good glass on it. In my limited experience with the savage 338's it seems to me that they like 300SMK's a lot. Mine stacks loads from SW ammo & Dallas Reloads in the same hole sometimes.
If you go with the 111, you'll need to widen the barrel channel to avoid contact after the barrel heats up. It softens the front end of the accustock in front of the bedding block. I widened mine quite a bit, then set a couple sections of carbon arrow in beside the block, anchored them out to the very end, & filled the whole front end with epoxy. It's pretty stiff now & groups tighter than you'd believe for the price. All I need to do now is lay a strip of glass in on top of it all & it might actually look professional...
Obviously I'm a fan. I don't plan to hike 20 miles with it, but I could. It has recoil, but it comes back onto target fast enough to spot my own hits past 700 on 15 power. On my friend's 110 the recoil is barely noticeable- I don't lose sight of the 700 yard steel at all. I haven't had opportunity to shoot the HS stock version yet, but I can easily assume that it might the best option of the three.

Re: Any Savage Owners

most of the extraction problems i have seen and heard about were with hornady brass. almost everyone says that hornady brass tends to be much softer than other brands lapua, etc. like i said before i have the 110BA in the .300 and i am currently shooting hornady ammo and i have yet to have an extraction problem with the rifle. im not sure if this is just a design problem with the 338s or not but like topstrap said, i think they need to go back to the drawing board. i have heard way to much of this problem and even a guy buying a brand new rifle and the chamber and feed ramp had large chatter marks in them which kept the extractor from grabbing the brass and he had to beat out the cases. all i got to say is cmon savage, i am a proud owner. lets get our shit together.
