I've got two 308's.
700p with 26" barrel 1/12 twist and
AR10 16" barrel 1/10 twist.
Haven't shot the AR10 yet but have had good results with the 168 SMK out of the 700p out to 600 yards but would like to shoot out to 1000. Out of these what do you suggest for the two? I understand the 175 is better after 600 and that it would be better out of the AR10 with the slower twist.

168 SMK
175 SMK
168 A-Max
178 A-Max

All would be from The Hunting Shack and I can get the A-max for about $100 cheaper per 500 rounds.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Re: Any suggestions on 308

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't expect to be able to even get to 1000 with AR10, especially with the 16" barrel, but I'm hoping for 6 or 700. Guess I'll go with the 175 SMK. I don't know anything about reloading yet. Maybe one day. Thanks again.

Re: Any suggestions on 308

With the AR 10, going with the heavier bullet 175 SMK you may not be able to push it fast enough to reach to 600 - 700 ACCURATELY. My friend has a DPMS 308 and faces the same problem. Even though it is a faster twist of 1:10" you just don't have enough barrel length to generate the speed to stay supersonic out to the longer distance. He ended up using the 155 scenars and has been very happy with it. JMHO

There are several who would disagree with that...

Gonna get the 175 smk's and try it in both. They both have great accuracy out to 500 with 168 smk's . Hadn't had a chance to go any further. Gonna go try them at 1000 when I get the 175's. Doubt the AR will get there. Thanks everybody.

The 168 are very accurate Bullets but they run out of steam in at distance especially in a gas gun. The 175 SMK was developed over 20 years ago in part so shooters competing w/M1A's could have bullet that would stay super sonic at 1,000 yards. I can say from hands on experience that an M1A is denfinately a 1,000 yard gun - don't know about an 16" AR 10 though.

178AMAX worked up with either Varget or AR-COMP. In my M700 with a 26" 1-12 twist 2650fps is the sweet spot for both powders with the edge in accuracy going to AR-COMP.
Can't comment on the AR I've never owned any large frame AR rifles.

168 grain A-MAX TAP 2628 fps at 70 degrees from my LMT MWS 18" SS. At 1000 yds should be 1135 fps and 480 fpe. Approximately 39 MOA up. Can ring steel at Rayner's Range at 1000 yds.

Holy thread resurrection from 8 years ago!!!
He's probably made his decision by now.

I have a DPMS GII Recon 16in with 1/10 twist had no issues keeping hitting at 500 and it was my first time shooting that far ever.
