Ok so being a total newbee and having the desire to enjoy long range shooting. I have been looking at the McMillan F-Class or A5 stock any thoughts on these? or any suggestions on another stock?

I'm fixing to have a gun built to do some long range shooting 600-1000 yds. 308 Cal if that helps.

Mike

Re: Any Suggestions on Stocks?

Newbie, the stock really depends on your style of shooting: hunting, prone, F-Class, Silhouette, XTC, etc. Since you mentioned F-Class, we'll touch on that one. You want a stock that rides the bags well since this is "belly-benchrest." That means a 3" wide forearm and a nice flat buttstock on the bottom.

Next, you will need to decide: wood or synthetic. There are many good choices with either option, but a wood stock will require pillar bedding and a v-block is not a bad idea.

For synthetic stocks, I'd start with McMillan, Manners, and Roberston Composites: those are the big boys. There are several smaller companies than are excellent as well.

I heard there's a company getting ready to release a new state-of-the-art chassis system hand carved from the ivory of African Elephant tusks. It's three times more rigid than carbon fiber and is impervious to all man-made materials. I'd hold out until pricing is released.

Nice Gun have you had any problems with your cheek rest coming down while shooting? I have read a few posts but I don't remember what Manufacture it was but the cheek rests were coming down while shooting after 4-5 shots? I was looking at an MCS-T5A anyone got any info on this stock? I'm also building a 308 cal style gun. Thanks for any help.

Re: Any Suggestions on Stocks?

I have not had a problem with slipping cheek rest on a Manners. I think those issues are on the McM with the thumb wheel adjuster. The T5A are great too, I have held them a lot and if I wanted a thumbhole style, thats the one I would get.

As long as there is sufficient torque applied to the crossbolt in the terry cross adjustable cheek hardware, it's not going to move, and it doesn't have to be a lot to ensure that. If it did happen, I can almost guarantee that it was operator error.

As for the McMillen thumb wheel style, I don't see that dropping down at all unless there was a issue with the hardware not being sized up correctly and it not getting full thread engagement.

As for the OP, Manners and Mcmillan both make great stocks, both makes the stocks different ways and have different techniques, but the end result is the same, a quality stock. As a manners employee, I have personal opinions that I keep off public forums, and to myself as a professional courtesy to both Tom Manners and Dick Davis. I will steer everyone to Manners, but i am biased. No matter which one you get, you no doubt will be happy.
