Claremore, ok
Hey guys having sold my 5r 308 because of loving my LAPR built 591 260. I love the 260 but the 24 inch barrel + can makes for one long rig. I have thought about having William fix me up with a 18in 308 barrel for a lighter handier rifle for use with my can.

What would be needed to make this shade tree wrench monkey job?

I know I would need the surgeon action wrench and a barrel vise anything else? Is it repeatable? is there a need to scribe a mark on the action and barrels to assist in return to a close zero? any input would be great thanks guys.

Dustin

I run a 308 / 7/08 AI switch barrel on a surgeon RSR.
If you can change a lightbulb you can swap barrels

I use

Tubb barrel vise. Bought it from Midway and it is inexpensive and works great!
Surgeon Action Wrench

I had APA scribe both barrels and the bottom of the action. It works like a charm.
I see no reason to use a torque wrench as with the mark it is 100% repeatable

Start saving the cardboard center out of your toliet paper rolls and use it to wrap around the barrel before using the vise. My barrels are coated and the cardboard keeps the looking perfect!!

Don't have reservations about a switch barrel. It saves money and is very easy

Dustin,

i would say from start to finish 10 to 15 minutes.

you remove your optic
take barreled action out of the stock
clamp down barrel vise
remove action from barrel
put other barrel in vise
tighten down action on new tube
re install barreled action to stock
install optic
put everythign away

it is an easy process i love having the options a switch barrel provides

in the long run it is a huge savings to me and worth the time and hassel

Re: Any switch barrel Surgeon 591s

Mine is currently being built
It will be more of a target rifle
591 action, McMillan A5, Badger Bottom Metal, Jewell Trigger
My first barrel is a Hart 8" Twist 6.5x47 Lapua Medium Palma contour finished at 30". The second barrel will be a 30" .308 for F/TR.
I will not have to remove the scope or stock from what my smith tells me. I have not purchased my barrel vise yet.I'll get the one he recomends. And use the Surgeon action wrench.
I'm going to rig it so I can plug it into the receiver hitch on my Suburban and change barrels at the range.

Re: Any switch barrel Surgeon 591s

Use a torque wrench and you will get pretty good results with repeatability.

The 591 is the perfect switch barrel platform as the recoil lug is integral with the action. I have owned several switch barrel 591 rifles.
