I am curious if anybody here works or has worked as a directional driller. I am a senior in Petroleum Engineering, graduate in Dec. 2011. I have previous experience working on drilling and workover rigs, and this summer I would like to get experience working as an assistant directional driller. I am planning on pursuing work as a directional driller upon graduation.

Would like to hear from anyone in the Directional Drilling business. If you have any info you can reply here or shoot me a PM.

I sell paint to a business here in Bama that is into drilling. Not sure what they do but I will check. The name of the company is Dixie Drilling in Birmingham Al. I will send you some info tomorrow on them after I get with the big man. Tommy

Re: Anybody here work as a Directional Driller?

Are you wanting to be the actual driller/operator of a rig or be the guy behind the scenes doing the calculations and deciding where and how to drill the laterals?

Re: Anybody here work as a Directional Driller?

Not looking to be a driller/operator, but an actual directional driller. The guy that runs the directional tools and makes sure the bit is going in the right direction.

I do some horizontal drilling but I dont think my wife would want me to hire someone to help.

Ok thats what I thought. I would get with Baker Hughes as they are one of the largest companies out there doing directional drilling. You wouldn't have to go far as you aware of the Bakken Shale in North Dakota and parts of Montana are very busy with directional drilling. North Dakota rig count last week was 150 and all but a few were directional. Good luck.

Thanks varmint slayer, I'll definitely look into them. A friend of a friend works for Baker Inteq up in Canada, I've been seeing if I could get on with them. I am a Canadian citizen, so I'm not sure if I am going to be able to get work done here because of that, but I'm trying.
