anyone have experience with 175 smk and 7mm-08 ?

Re: anyone have experience with 175 smk and 7mm-08 ?

The 175 I don't think you're going to get 2700 out of. I'm guessing closer to 2650 or slower due to the ammount of added space the round takes up in the case, assuming you have a factory land measurement. The new 175berger you may be better off with because the bullet is more pointed and will hang into the threads further before it hits the lands. But still 2600-2650 on fps should be about max unless you're walking the wild side on powder.

Good luck,
Merritt

I found where one person was getting 2755 with it loaded out to 2.835 OAL and 46 grain Re 17. My rifle is a SPS varmint special run in 7mm-08 with 26" barrel, 1 in 9 1/4 twist. I have also modified the action to accept wyatts box to let me run OAL of 2.990.

You can get a bit over 2700 with PP2000MR and the 162AMAX, which has a higher BC than the 175MK,(625 vs 608) pushing the 175 past 2700 sounds dangerous to me, 46grs RE17 is 2 grains past the max in the Alliant manual. But if it works for you, work up! BTW, the 162 says 8 twist and it stabilizes in my 9 1/8 twist.

Re: anyone have experience with 175 smk and 7mm-08 ?

One, I don't think you can get the 175 to stabilize properly in your 9.25 twist.
At least not at the speeds you'll be able to get from the 7MM08.
My 7WSM is a 9 twist and stabilizes 175 VLD very well. It has been to 1000 yards with great accuracy. But the velocity is 3000 FPS.
I shoot 168 SMK in my 7MM08. Barrel is 26" and twist is 1 in 8.7. Velocity is mid 2700 range. It will (hope this doesn't start a shit storm) outshoot the 308/175 load any day.
As JGorski suggests, try the 162 or 168 grain bullets.

Re: anyone have experience with 175 smk and 7mm-08 ?

Just an FYI, the 180 VLD has a recommended 9 twist and a BC of 698. Id bet good money the 175MK would work in a 9 1/4 twist. That being said, Id still go with the 162AMAX for its higher BC. And it works in my Rem 700 708 9&1/4 twist.

Re: anyone have experience with 175 smk and 7mm-08 ?

I think I am gonna try 168 vld first since I have two boxes of them left over from my 7mm rem mag that I got rid of. depending on how they do I will try amax next. I know that load of reloader 17 is more than max, but look what people are doing with it in 308 with 208 amax too. I would think there would be no issue stabilizing the the 162 amax because berger calls for 1 in 10 with 168 vld and the amax is shorter than it.

I tried RE17 and PP2000MR with the 162s, I found 2000MR worked a bit better.

Re: anyone have experience with 175 smk and 7mm-08 ?

According to Litz the G1 bc of the 175 smk is 0.640 and the 162 amax is 0.600

I ran the 175smk out of m 22" 708 with R17, G7 bc's matched what Litz had listed, mine was a 22" broughton, it would run 2700 comfortably with Lapua 308 brass necked down, I ran it up to 2750 but on a long string of fire I would start to show pressure, thus the reason for backing it down to 2700.

I think the 175smk is a great combo with the 7mm08.

According to Sierras website:
.608 @ 2100 fps and above
.582 between 2100 and 1530 fps
.532 between 1530 and 1300 fps
.500 @ 1300 fps and below

Re: anyone have experience with 175 smk and 7mm-08 ?

I was actually gonna try H4350 first. I have seen lots of people get 2700 with it also. My barrel is 26" but I am thinking about having it cut down to 20 or 22 so I will probably just get the best I can get with H4350 because I know it is a stable powder

Fully aware of both advertised values.

Litz's G7 and G1 models/values are more accurate. G7's matched with the 175smk's out to 1400. The 175 has a superior bc in comparison to the 162 amax.
