Re: Anyone have Quickload?
When I started handloading 12 years ago, I started at 200 gr 44 gr surplus IMR4895 8mm book load and worked up from 44 gr to 52 gr, before I got a sticky bolt.
I was sweaty handed all the way, as I had not learned yet how strong that 1898 Mauser rifle was and how strong that case head was.
Then when I tried to repeat the experiment, I got a very sticky bolt at 51 gr.
I had not yet learned the safety margin for the stack up of variables in my reloading process.
Later I would learn that my jugs of surplus IMR4895 were bulk powder, and did not behave like the Quickload library variables for canister IMR4895. Fortunately, that lot number works just like H322 in the Quickload library.
Eventually I learned that the 98 Mauser is stronger than the 8mm case head. I needed to focus on brass life, and the rifle would not blow up.
Eventually I learned that the 8mm case head with large Boxer primer pocket was SAAMI registered at 35,000 psi and the 6mmRem and 270Win were registered at 65,000 psi, but they all have the same case head.
When Quickload is operated correctly, the velocity should match the chronograph and the 8mm primer pockets should get loose in one firing somewhere between 72kpsi and 75kpsi. The primer pockets should last more than 5 firings somewhere between 67 kpsi and 72 kpsi.
Backing off a safety margin from the threshold of long brass life, 65 kpsi in Quickload is a good place for the 8mm case head with handloads for a particular rifle.
