Thought about putting this in the hunting section, but im really looking for ballistic advice and thought i could find more info here. Sorry if its in the wrong area.

I just finished a pig hunting trip in Texas using my .308 with hand loads (Amax 168) running just over 2700 fps. I was very surprised at how ineffective the rounds were for immediate knock down power! And just for the record, I also shot a pig with Remington core-lock 180's with the exact same effect. This got me thinking about buying another hunting rifle with more power behind it. I thought about the 30-06, but after comparing stats, its just about even with the .308. So I began thinking about 300WM and 300WSM and was hoping you guys could shed a little light on the likes and dislikes of both. This will be used solely for a hunting gun, hunting pigs, deer and elk. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

CJ

Myself I have both but shooting it a lot even reloading I would stick with the 300 Win Mag as WSM brass is way expensive ? All the animals you mentioned will not be able to tell any difference! If I were hunting Elk I would say try a premium bullet and leave the CoreLok's at home but that's just me? I would opt for a Partition on something big!

You must be shooting some really large hogs!

I'm not here to say you're a bad shot, so don't take it like that but how is your shot placement? I've killed a few hogs and even got one with my G19 while out working on the lease (right at about 200 lbs) from about 20 feet away. I spined that one so it walloped to the ground but that was pure luck.

I've never had a DRT shot on a hog but they've never gone more than 10-15 yards. I'd go with a different load before i dropped the cash on a new rifle. You need something that has a little more penetration on hogs as they are much thicker than deer.

I'd go 7mag over 300wm but that's personal preference.

Use a 223 in the forehead and DRT

I had bad performance on pigs with the 168s before as well.

Buddy uses the 168 berger hunting bullets and it shreds pigs.

I also own both. .300WSM brass is spendy as said above. I use the .300WM and .300WSM for elk and bear here in Washington. Love them both, but the only down side i complain about it cost and availability of the .300WSM brass and the in stock box magazine capacity. wish the short mag held more but thats what ya get when your packing thumbs in a magazine instead of markers.

300 WSM is great, but why don't you try some decent hunting bullets out of your 308 first instead of using target bullets or those made with 1980's technology? I've killed every species that you mention with a 308, using appropriate bullets. For lead-free, try the 150 TTSX, otherwise go with the 150 or 165 Accubond. It's important to match the bullet to the round.

And yes, shot placement is key.

Thanks for the info guys! Either way I'm getting a new rifle, it's just a matter of 300WM or WSM. I've been hunting with my 16lb AI which isn't fun to lug around so I need something a little lighter and figured it'll be fun to have a different caliber.

As far as shot placement, two shots were lung (285 & 260 Yrds) and one was heart (Just over 100 Yrds). The pigs died after running between 30-40 yards but I guess I thought they'd go down quicker. Definitely learned how much tougher wild pigs are!

Recommendations on hunting bullets for the 300 would be great to. I'll start looking up the ones already suggested.

Thanks again!

The problem is likely your bullet selection, not your caliber. I have killed several hogs using .308 with the Hornady Interlock Spire Point bullets, both 150 and 165 grain rounds. Each pig dropped on the spot and never moved a step, the wound channels were very severe. 308 was definitely plenty of caliber with the right bullet.

The Barnes TSX bullets are also a great choice, my hunting buddy uses those in his 6.8 SPC and also has great results on hogs. That same buddy took a bad shot on a hog once using his 375 Ruger lobbing 300 grain rounds, and the hog ran off. He found it later but it was another good reminder that more caliber won't help if shot placement is off.

I have had two 300 WSMs and still own one. It was just rebarreled in preparation for an upcoming elk hunt. While the brass is a bit high, you will find that it will last longer than the belted 300 WM brass.

I am glad to know the WSM brass will outlast Win mag brass and I have some Nickle brass but really do not wanta fool with it but hear it's not to finicky !! I have heard both good and bad ? I agree you have been great bullet info as TSX or TTSX will hold together and you should get deep penetration as it is a monster! I think you have a bunch of options and that is why I own numerous 30 Calibers! My WSM is a BAR light Weight Stalker and my 300 Win Mag is my new Chris Kyle Weatherby Accumark and I plan on using 190 gr bullets in it! I mentioned price on WSM brass but I forgot it's really hard to find as well but I would and will use them both as I am planning a slaughter trip back to my home aka the Ouachita River Bottoms that is infested with hogs! I mean smoking a barrel infested!

If it were me I would go with a 7 SAUM and shoot 180 hunting VLD's or hybrids close to 3000fps.

That being said i hunt hogs with my 223 AR and almost all of them drop where they stand with a 77grain smk right behind their ear

Am thinking go heavy, like 208AMax, or 210, or better yet, 220 or 230grain. (Or, drag out the 50 and they'll be DRT)
