Girlfriend and I are going to Hawaii this christmas - never been there and Kauai looks to be the place....

The Marine base and navy bases have bungalo's that can be rented so while I'm a contractor my g/f is a GS-12 --

Anyone rented or is it better to go elsewhere?

I'm thinking of up north (rainy?) - near where they filmed Gilligans island....

Re: Anyone in Kauai

We used to make an annual trip to Kauai. The Barking Sands naval barracks are pretty cool, but you are at the ass end of the island, meaning it would take you a good half day to travel to the other side of the island, near Princeville, Hanalei Bay and Lihue (the biggest city in Kauai). However you are right there for some of the most awesome hiking and biking in Waimea Canyon and the Na'Pali Coast. If you wanna drop some coin and have a romantic evening, Port Aurthur is down the road and there's a couple boating companies that offer sunset cruise and dinners up the Na'Pali coast- definitely one of the "must do's" if your in Kauai.
If you're into the resort style thing, then you wont find much on the west side of the island. The closest resorts are going to be in Poipu, Lihue, and Princeville, all to the east and north of the island.

Re: Anyone in Kauai

I went there to shoot a rifle match a time or two, I stayed in the BOQ.

It was always a pleasure for this old paratrooper to give marines shooting lessons.

Re: Anyone in Kauai

Scott, you HAVE to hike the top of the Waimea canyon. It is the nation's wettest average rainfall and the view is superb. Also you need to dive the outside of the reef at Salt Pond park.
You have to have a bowl of Saimin, a plate lunch, manapua, and watch the sun go down while enjoying a Zombie on the west shore at Hanapepe.

This should give you an idea of where and what to look for

Kauai is cool. If you want to try body boarding or surfing it has a few really nice breaks.
We spent our honeymoon there...ten years after we got married(yeah, funds just weren't good as a Lance Jack for all that)

Re: Anyone in Kauai

Switch hiking won't be in - I"m going on vacation LOL
We're going to drive up to it and maybe helicopter in - depending on weather...

So far it looks like we're staying at the NE side of the island where they filmed Gilligans island, 6 days and 7 nights....

We're stoked and this trip is for CHRISTMAS....sheesh!!

Luckily we're getting the nice weather star ting to roll in tho.

Re: Anyone in Kauai

Dude, it's like a itty bitty hike from where you park the car to the landmark rock. The view from the trail 'makai'(toward the water) is so worth it too. Helicoptering in? Is that from Oahu? ANything on Kuai can be accessed via the highway except for a few points. Is the place your staying one of those?

Still, you need to get the best local grinds. The Saimin is a killer treat, ask the locals where to get the best saimin bowl. Same for the plate lunch

Re: Anyone in Kauai

The helicopter takes you into the valley - not accessable by road - the near entire west side of the island is that way...

Girlfriend gets motion sickness tho, so she nixed that LOL - Mostly US Army veteran pilots too, bummer...

The base I work on has a missile base there on the west side, where the road stops - we may cruise down that way for a day too.

We're going to take the road far west to watch the sunset and hike down to the beach (100 yards I guess)...
