Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

Bill,

With Win brass and 155's I ran all the way up to 47.8gr of Varget before I started seeing some ejector swipes and slight flattening of the edge of primers. 47.2gr was where I settled for a while, but primer pockets will get a little loose running this warm after about 4-5 loadings.

I've since gone back to my previous node which is milder at 45.6gr Varget. This is in a Rem 700.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

One of the shooters at my club shoots 45 grains of Varget behind 168 SMK's and shoots one hole 100 yard groups consistantly with his 308 TRG 22.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

I run 44.4 gr of Varget with 175SMKs and its an absolute hammer out of my 18" barrel. OAL is 2.855" in Win brass, FGMM primers. Highly recommend it.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

I'm running 46.2 gr.of Varget pushing 168 gr. BTHP Sierras out of Lapua brass with Federal GM210M primers seated .05 off the lands. Great groups from 200 all the way out to 750 yards.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

I'm shooting the Nos 168's with 43.8, factory barrel, holds about 5" at 600 yds.

The best mine would do with 175's was with 43.0 and that wasn't great. Durn barrel sure likes the Sie 190's though, about the same powder charge, 43.0 ~ 43.4.

Can't magazine load those so back to the 168's for standard loads.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

Rem 700 20" with cyclone k. 45.7 varget, win brass, rem 9.5 primers, 168 smk, 239 above sea level. 2630 fps. I've loaded hotter but they don't group as well.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

I've got a pet load....

Bullet: Hornady 168 AMAX
Case: Hornady TAP brass (neck-sized)
Primer: either WLR or CCI-200
Powder: 45.5 grains of Varget
Velocity: 2793 fps

Best group at 100 yards was in the .3's
Best group at 1000 yards was 5.490"

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

My pet load.

175 SMK
Win brass
CCI 250
45.5 gr IMR 4064 (similar to varget but better in velocity in my rifle)
OAL 2.820
2600 fps.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

Thanks, always wondered how they stuff that much myself.
Depends more on prep, brass, and seating depth.
45 grains of varget, or rl-15 was giving 2830 to 2863 with 30", depending on prep and conditions.(jugs of varget were hard to come by last year.)
44.5 is giving just over 2800.
Seating depth is .015 over 168 hornady match, with lapua brass.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

Yeah, I forgot to mention that I seat 0.015" off the lands, so it turns into a single shot rifle...., plus since I neck size the brass after it's fire formed to my chamber, it gives it a little more powder capacity.

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

Rem 700 21" Obermyer barrel 11.25 twist
46.1 grains Varget
Winchester new brass
Fed 210M primer
155 Scenar's
2.805" OAL
5500' elevation
2850 fps

Re: Anyone shooting 308 with 45 + grains of Varget?

47.2gr. Varget + 155 scenar in Lapua Brass.

Was a winter load, so might be a little hot this time of year.

Shot well in a GAP Crusader
