Does anyone have experience of these AR-10 National Match models. My main concern is reliabilty at sandy conditions and in icy/snowy freezing conditions.---->Are the tolerances overly tight(chamber etc.)

http://www.armalite.com/ItemForm.aspx?it...a0-49488ec48776

These are now available here in Finland. The selection of AR-10 rifles here is limited.

With the same price 2850€ I can by an H&K mr308 with 16.5" (to short for my needs)barrel or an Oberland arms OA-10 with 20-26" barrel or have a custom built ar-10 made from armalite parts.

Re: AR-10 National Match

Those rifles shoot well.
A friend of mine used one to compete in a long range (1000 yards) service rifle match at camp perry last year.

He was impressed with it.
It seemed to shoot about 1/2 moa with M118 LR.

Icy conditions don't seem to affect the AR rifles much, sand should be kept out and if it does find its way in there, drop the mag, turn the rifle ejection port down, and cycle the weapon manually until it all finds its way back out.
Don't let sand back in.
The AR's with dust covers do a descent job of keeping all but the finest crap out.

You would be hard pressed to find a better rifle but they are fairly heavy.

Re: AR-10 National Match

ERA - this is a US NRA Service Rifle legal configuration, not a US CMP Service Rifle legal configuration. The CMP does not recognize the AR in a 308 chambering for Service Rifle competition.

Those issues aside, Armalite, like most production shops, is not known for running tight headspace on their barrels. By tight, I mean what most custom smiths would consider "match" headspace, which is between .000" and .002" over minimum.

I would expect this Armalite to be approaching or at no-go, or .006" over minimum, if history is any guide. I would also expect the chamber not to be a tight one, rather something along the lines of an M852 reamer blueprint, which is generous in the throat and neck area as well as longer freebore (.120"), a print commonly used in NM M14 rifles.

You could try calling Armalite's customer service department and see if they will reveal to you the details of the reamer blueprint they use in these rifles.

As far as other tolerances, such as the bolt to receiver clearance, this rifle model will use the same bolt and receiver as any other AR-10 Armalite makes. Expect no dimensional changes there just because it carries the NM moniker.

That seems like a lot, here in the US they are ~2k USD. You can get the upper itself without the NM sights for 1k.

If you're just target shooting with it maybe look at an AR10T model instead?

Sorry it was an NRA (not cmp) 800,900, and 1000 yard service rifle match shot at camp Perry 2010.
I was there, and it is legal, and used for 1000 yard SR comp.
For service rifle comp at those ranges, it is probably the best choice out there.

Re: AR-10 National Match

Nothing to be sorry about Hamilton - just giving the OP some background on the rifle is all from a US perspective.

I haven't received any feedback yet from the AMU as to what percentage affect going to the 308 over the 223 has had for them at LR. I am looking forward to getting a glimpse at this data. Suffice to say their testing pre-Nationals had to have been positive, otherwise they would not have fielded them.

Re: AR-10 National Match

Thanks for info. The rifle comes to sniper comps etc tactical use.
Currently I use TRG-42 and TRG-22 to them.

Unfortunately AR-10T is no longer available here in Finland. I have seen how the AR-10T model does malfunctions in cold conditions. As far as I understand the rifle was not getting enough gas due temperature and rate of powder burn. Still it was very accurate with 155grs Scenars and VV n150. However I have not seen the same symptom in other friends Ga precision ar-10.

Re: AR-10 National Match

I have an AR10 in a NM configuration. The barrel and the chambering/assembly done by Krieger. It is a 1/10 twist with an Obermeyer Chamber. I have never had a mechanical malfunction (around 350 rounds). So far it runs like a top.
