Im about to place an order for some primers to load up some .223 ammo.

I came across a thread that said the even though the .223 primer is small, it is a different primer altogether. Here is whats reccomended FED #GM205MAR AR SMALL RIFLE MATCH PRIMERS.

So are any Small Rifle Primers good for the AR15 ammo or do you need a specific one?

Re: AR-15 Primer

They use a standard Small Rifle primer, but it gets a bit more comlicated than that. Due to their floating firing pins, the are best served by a primer that offers some proctection against slam fires. This would be the reason behind the 205GMAR, which I would assume has a somewhat thicker cup than the regular 205 or 205M. Wolf offers several primers specifically for use in ARs, as well as CCI and their #41, which duplicates the LC Small Rifle primer used in M193, M855 and other 5.56mm rounds.

They'll all work, but some may resist slamfires better than others. Personally, I've used a wide variety of different primers in my own ARs over the years and never had a problem.

Re: AR-15 Primer

I'm using Federal 205M in my precision AR, and have been for about 1200 rounds now. Just be careful to make sure all primers are seated below flush and you shouldn't have issues. I use CCI's in my plinking ammo.
