ar-15 uppers?

im lookin for a good conversion upper for my AR. i want somethin that has a bigger bore but also hase a desent range on it. ive been looking at some of the .50 beowulf and .450 bushmaster uppers but the range on em isnt exactly what ild like. 6.5 grendal seems like a good way to go but the uppers are so darn expensive. any input? any experiences with those uppers? im lookin for somethin that i could take a deer with but mostly plink with. i wouldnt mind a bolt action upper (ive seen some in .50 BMG and .408 so i assume that they would make some in .338 and similar.

6.5 Grendel and build it on a Vltor MUR1 upper reciever.
Put a A2 buttstock on it and maybe a smaller optic setup if you want something lighter for hunting with. Those two changes will save you alot of $$ too.

Take a good look at the 450 bushmaster. I love mine it is realy fun to shoot.

What range do you plan on using the conversion upper for in terms of both hunting deer and plinking?

Some of the big-bore AR platforms (458 SOCOM, 450BM, 50 Beowulf, etc.) are excellent big game rifles, capable of taking any game in North America, but their range is limited to less than 200yds (give or take).

The 6.5 Grendel is a true performer in terms of accuracy, range and having sufficient power at extended ranges to take deer-sized game. Some people have called the 6.5 Grendel for the AR-15 platform one of the greatest North American game rifles available. (I don't know I'd go quite that far).

The problem with any of those conversion uppers is going to be: 1) cost of the upper; and 2) cost of the ammo to feed them which is substantially more than .223/5.56 ammo. You can pick up a complete 6.5G upper for less than $1,000 (cheaper if you can find a used one on ARFCOM, the 6.5 Grendel Forums, etc.) or you can build one for around $700 or maybe a little less. The ammo is where it hurts unless you reload (even then it can still be painful).

mostly i will hunt in southern california. its mostly open land so i would plan to make shot at the good part of 225-300 at the most. how about 25 wssm? ive seen (atleast on paper) that they have very good range and the energy is better than the larger bore(450 50 beowulf and 6.8) at even 150-200 yds. does any one have any experience with the WSSM's? even in a bolt gun?
