Have a buddy looking to get into an AR with a n 8 twist and probably an 18 or 20 inch barrel, flattop. I suggested a RRA, but I dont know if his wallet can afford such a rifle. Wondering if anyone has a good "wallet friendly" suggestion for something like that. Also open to a modest bolt gun with similar features (.223, 8 twist, 20-24in.) thanks

Factory bolt guns with 1:8s aren't all that common. 1:9s are. I have a Bushmaster 1:7 Gov. profile upper that I got from them during their Tax Day sale a couple of years back, which works for the heavies.

For ARs, 1:9s are pretty common as well. You can get specilty barrels for them in any twist, but that's going to cost him some coin.

    Any reason he wants a 1:8 over a 1:9?

There is nothing wallet friendly about rifles but if he wants an AR that will drive tacks then get a barrel from compass lake. The prices are good and the quality is outstanding.

I think Tikka T-3 bolt actions come with a 1:8 twist - and seemed to be highly regarded for out of the box accuracy...

Take a serious look at one of these Scott at Specialized Dynamics builds. LINK

I have an 8 twist from him and it rocks, not to mention you'd be supporting a Hide Sponsor.

Re: AR-15 with an 8 twist

I've got two 1:8 twist ARs with 223 Wylde chambers and love them. Optimized for 69gr pills but able to shoot up to 75 and down to 55 without issues. The 223 Wylde provides a happy medium between 223 Rem and 5.56mm. It really is a good universal twist and chambering for an AR.

Please excuse the mild hi-jack, but what load did you use for your Hornady 75's? I've tried that bullet in several different AR's with not much luck.

    Thanks Scottmilk9!
