Alright fellas, I need your opinions on some optics for a Daniel Defense V5. I shoot right handed but am left eye dominate. I'm interested in either a red dot(Aimpoint Pro or Eotech XPS) or a 1-4ish scope. This rifle will be used for plinking out to 400 yards, some night coyote/pig hunting and SHTF gun if necessary. I haven't found an Aimpoint Pro or a 1-4 scope anywhere local to look through but am wondering about with issues if I decided to go with a 1-4. Will I be able to use the scope with both eyes open? I shoot handguns with both eyes open and wold like to do the same wih this.

Re: AR optic question, right hand shooter but left eye

In the case studies I've read if you are truly (strongly) left eye dominate you should start shooting left handed. Studies show that those with a strong dominate eye cannot "shift" fast enough because the brain will be fighting the optic nerves signal.

If you do want to continue shooting right handed go with a red dot of some sort as even with a 1-4 optic at 1X your right eye will still be looking through a "tube" even if you think you are not and it will again slow you down.

To show yourself the difference get on a bench with a moderate power scope (10-15 or so), get behind it first left handed and relaxed, close and open you left eye and note how quickly and easily you lock in on a target. Then do the same on the right side using your right eye and note the huge time difference.

I've tried shooting left hand and it just hasn't worked for me. I may just buy one of the Burris systems that has a fastfire and a 1-4 scope. It may help me find what I want.

I agree with the above- but guess what life sucks. I'm STRONG left eye dominant, I've tried shooting lefty and I can't. I'm pretty left hand useless. Time to target is slower right eye then left, but as poorly as my left hand functions I'm faster right handed by far. You're eye picking up the sight picture is not the only thing involved in being effective.

OP- I've had very good luck with 1-4's. Having an illuminated center/dot definitely helps as well. Once my eye can pick that up work on "seeing past the reticle to the target" As soon as my eye try's to focus on the reticle I'll lose the sight picture. Focus on the target!

For the price I'm VERY happy with my MTAC 1-4x, clear glass, reticle is easy to pick up and the center dot really helps me.
Personally I would avoid a FFP for awhile as on 1x there's not a whole lot to pick up and can make it difficult.

ACOG- Was not easy for me.
Eotech- Works good
Aimpoint- works good

These are just my experiences.

I'm fairly strongly left eye dominant myself, and I shoot right-handed as well.

I run an Eotech on one of my work rifles, and have NO problems shooting with that optic, with both eyes open.
