AR Poblems.. HELP needed

Hey guys,

I'm pretty new to this Semi-auto thing so I can use some of your knowledge and expertise on this one.

My situation is the following: I recently purchased a DPMS LR308 and after a short while with it I decided I wanted to convert it to 260REM. So I sent it to Krieger who installed 26" barrel (rem 260) and one of their gas blocks.

Yesterday I took it to the range to work up some loads and what I experienced was the following: I had about 4 jams in just about 40 rnds. that I took. A buddy of mine who is more knowledgeable of AR's advised that he felt it was undergassed due to the fact that the spent brass was being spit out rather weak (in his opinion) out of the receiver. I went through some threads advising to check for leakage and what I found is what I believe may or may not be the problem so hence this thread.

I observed a build up of carbon on the outside of the barrel, around the the gas block, aswell as a light build up on the gas block and gas tube where the two meet. Does this sound like the possible problem?

Unfortunately since the barrel install this is the second time I have to send the upper back to KRIEGER. The first time, just after receiving it, it was beating up my brass wayyyyyy to much so I sent it back. They held it there for almost two months and just sent it back last week with a new gas block and now this.

Are you testing with Factory .260 REM loads? Or Reloads? If you are reloading are using shortbase full length dies?

My friend experienced the similar and it was due to him not re-sizing properly. The added pressure made the brass kick out really bad, so then he drilled out the gas port which then made it not eject. I think he was able to switch out a buffer, and put an adjustable gas block. Fixed the problem.

I would say without a doubt its a gas problem.. 95% of AR issues are gas problems, and carbon around the gas block/tube isnt all to uncommon, but not after 40 rds.. I would check alignment definately if you have the ability to do so.

Re: AR Poblems.. HELP needed

I know this is a slightly different gun. A friend of mine has an LR-308 with similar problems(jamming and barely throwing the case out of the gun). The problem was too much gas. He installed an adjustable gas block and adjusted it to be more restrictive. The rifle then ran fine. The symptoms were similar to that of the video below. Notice how the extractor is letting go of the case. Not saying that your problem is one way or another. Just giving another point of view. If you're getting leakage in the gas system, it could be symtom of too much gas also.

BTW these are not my videos, just found them on youtube when doing research for my friend's problematic LR-308.

This next video is after some parts were changed. Gun seems to run fine.
The poster of the video claimed the following changes:
Replacement of cutdown 3.8oz aluminum buffer body containing two tungsten weights with steel buffer body containing two tungsten and one steel weights, resulting in a weight of 7oz.

Replacement of stock short action spring with Tubb CS flat wire spring

I would at least consider installing some type of adjustable gas block.

Re: AR Poblems.. HELP needed

your going to have to get a adjustable gas block, JP has a nice one or go to a piston system,

Much cheaper to just get the gas block

the buffer and spring might need some work i recommend spikes tactical st-t3 and the corresponding spring,
