Hey guys, I am just getting into all this long range shooting and reloading. I am trying to work up a load for my AR10T with a 20" barrel for everything 1000 yards and under that is also deadly for hunting. So what bullet? 155/175/190 and then also I have read that this H4895 powder will shoot faster velocities in my shorter 20" barrel VS the varget that I currently use with my 168 grain SMK's.

I am steering clear of the 168's now and moving to the 155/175 or 190. And trying to figure out the best load. I know it depends on the gun alot and what it likes, but what do yall think about the powder?

Am I missing something?

H4895 w/ the 155 scenars is a solid combo.

So , how's the "Swamp" ?
Where are you shooting long range near G'ville? I never found a good spot while I was there.

Hey Wes, well... there is a place called "Bradford Sportsman's Farm" about 40-45 mins away. Right now it is 642 yards to the berm, but they are in the process of punching it out to 800 and something. We had shot at the 600ish line and are going to try the 800. I want a round though that will do good at 1000 also... because I can shoot that far on my girlfriends ranch down near dade city.

There's an exellent on-going article series on handloading .308 winchester in the TargetShooter online magazine. It'll help you answer questions for yourself and make educated decisions. Like you said, it depends on the rifle. No two are identical, not even same makes and models.

Let us know what works better for you.

BTW- they're both good powders, otherwise Hodgdon wouldn't be making them. I prefer H4895 because it flows through the thrower easier and, IN MY PARTICULAR FIREARM, it yeilds better velocities. However I also found that Varget gives more consistant velocities throughout the entire year. Have fun.

try 41.5 of h4895 with 168gr in commercial case. gets you around 2600 ~. the same load in a military match case with get around 2800. i have found both to be extremely accurate.
