Does anyone here build shrot barrel rifles? I want to build or buy the right one. For me that might be a 7 to 8 inch barrel with a muffler AR15 style 5.56x45 6 position stock. I have done a lot of searchs seems to be a circle for me right now. Any help with research would be great.

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

Research the ATF side of it first. You will need a tax stamp for the short barrel rifle and another for the suppressor. If you have a local class three dealer, that would be the best place to start since the purchases will have to go through them anyhow. Once you have a registered lower, you can buy short barrel uppers from just about any company.

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

I am working on the nfa side of it. But that will take time. So thought I would work on the parts to be used. Will buy the complete upper and complete lower or the complete rifle if it is set up to fit my needs. I can add the silencer later. Which company has the 7 to 8 inch barrel? Seen only a few for pistols don't know if there is a difference between the rifle and pistol barrels. But have only seen a few. Give me some links please.

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

I did not know that. Thank you for telling me. That is someting I will have to keep in mind. That is what this post is to do, find out information. Thank you again.

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

Many people also report reliability issues with barrels under 10.5 inches due to the gas system.

It is absolutely abusive on the blast baffle of a suppressor (or the sacrificial muzzle break system some manufacturers use) with the shorter SBR's, and may wear out your suppressor measurably quicker.

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

I have a 10.5" LWRC upper that I really like. I can say that unsuppressed it is quite deafening, and I have been told that the 7" ones are even more so.

You should also look into what round you are using and what it's terminal ballistics will be like with the velocity that you are going to get from your barrel length. The shorter you go, the slower the round is at the muzzle, and that's fairly detrimental for a round that is lightweight to begin with.

Here is mine:

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

The reason the velocity is less for the round is because not all the powder from the case is burnt by the time it hits the muzzle. All that unburnt powder hits the air and flash ignites, which is pretty hard on the suppressor. Lots of good info can be found at "silencertests", and you will likely get most all your answers there. Search first, most of this already exists there.

Good luck!

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

I have a factory RRA 10.5" upper on my pistol lower and it works great...until I put my AAC cyclone-k on. It still functions put the blow back is unreal. In just 5 or so rds it turns the shiney brass that is still in the mag completly grey, and also throws the empty brass in the 1 o'clock position instead od 3 o'clock without the can. I think I might need to look into an adjustable gas block or something, I don't know much about AR's so I have not reserched it further, and just fire it without the can for now. The overall lenghth is about right for me with the 10.5 upper and a 7" or so can, balance is good and weight is manageable. I would be nice if the ATF would hurry up on my sbr stamp so I can put it on my rifle lower!!

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

Heard you can get the Noveske switchblock now as a seperate component. That could be a pretty cool way to help with that blowback.

Post a pic with the cyclone once your stamp is in, I'd love to see it. I am thinking about a 762SD for the 10.5" in the future.

Cheers!

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

Well let me ask this if I forget the suppressor what do you think about the 7 or 8 inch barrel. I know they look good. But that is about all. Give me some feed back.

Thanks for all the info so far keep it going.

Re: AR15 sbr w/muffler

I agree they look sharp, but I personally would be concerned that too short of a barrel would result in a carbine that was only effective at very close ranges, and at the same time would be so abusive in a CQB situation to not want too.

But.... the best part of a SBR AR build is that once you get the tax stamp back for your lower, you can put whatever you want on it, barrel length wise. So if one that short makes you giggle, go for it, you can always put longer ones up top if you want something else. (please be cautious of NFA rules regarding uppers and lowers if you have more than one AR lower receiver.)

I will say, if you get a 7" upper, you HAVE to go get a Degroat Tactical Flash Enhancer, just for giggles. Nothing like a huge fireball for dusk time chuckles.
