I guess the M40A1 you "drug around" was a M70? Whatever.

You are correct in that the M24 is a long action and the SS 5R is a short action 700. If the barrels were the same, the M24 would be a little easier to tote.

Re: Army M24 Build Thread

Listen you guys I will argue with you until the cows come home if I am right or wrong. Doesn't matter. There are some added features to the M24 but it is just a 700 long action with a different barrel. Nothing special. Not like the M110. It is the shooter, and always will be the shooter who makes the rifle.

You who were shooters and lucky enough like myself to have the vision to be "special", not sure so much if it's luck or a curse know what I am talking about.

My guys were able to ID targets to 800 meters which was pretty darn good imo. With some of the more recent optics that has changed and for the better as long as the systems are maintained!

Does anyone have a pic of the flash hider on the M24? I know we have a pic from above, does any have a real pic up close. Those are nice pics of M24s. Did the Army ever go with the M24a2 or a3?

Is the Army PEOs product improvement for the M24 going to be the M24A2 mods as posted at Remington? I know that some groups are going to the AICS.

Re: Army M24 Build Thread

+1 ReaperDriver, he needs to stop. As we all know the 24 isn't dead but being retrofitted to bring it up to date. Almost every one here knows that there will always be a need and a purpose for a bolt action rifle, I can list the reasons why but for the less please read books to gain knowledge before spewing uninformed and uneducated opinions

Re: Army M24 Build Thread

This is from popular mechanics.

The Army is now selecting a contractor to upgrade the 22-year-old Remington bolt-action rifle to become a more effective killing machine. The Army will pour about $5.6 million into upgrades to the M24, with the new gear expected to be delivered to troops by this fall. The M24's barrel is being modified to shoot heavier .300 Winchester Magnum rounds, instead of the 7.62mm NATO ammunition, which should extend the rifle's maximum effective range by hundreds of yards to a maximum of about 1400 yards. The suppressor will reduce the noise and flash of the gun so snipers can stay in their hiding positions much longer after they fire.

The Army is also adopting a new chassis that allows for more "real estate" on the rifle—meaning the ability to attach accessories, especially much-needed night-vision devices that clip on directly to the rail in front of the scope. The scope itself will be improved, adding a variable power system that can reach 16.5x to 25x magnification.

Joey, I know that you hate the MK13 but tell me how you liked the 300 WM round as opposed to the 762?

Re: Army M24 Build Thread

Pretty sure 25ID went with AICS.

It will be interesting to figure out what the "approved" Army solution will be on this.

Not to hijack-- I wonder what will happen if Remington's MSR wins the SOCOM contract--seems like it would be an easy (and lucrative) sale to upgrade the rest of the Army to one standard.

Seriously????

I know more guys to include ODA teams who despise the M110! The bolt action systems built properly are far from obsolete!

I know one of the teams from Carson that used the AICS but they didn't care for the feel of it (personal preference).

We'll see what happens.

Re: Army M24 Build Thread

HAHAHA

So far your infomation has been:
- Years old
- Wikipedia
- Internet advertisements

You have no credibility whatsover. The M110 is in service but is not replacing but augmenting the M24. The M110 has had mediocre reviews particularly in units serving in afghanistan. It is a more modular weapons system with rapid fire capability better suited for shorter distance engagements in MOUT operations but sacrifices range, accuracy, and reliability when compared to the M24. Is the M24 better than the M110? Arguably no, they are totally different platforms suited for different missions. The upgraded M24 is expected to have a service life of 10 years and is the basis for future systems. I don't claim to be an expert, and welcome any correction to the above information by someone with more knowledge than a wannabe sniper who seems to have google and video games as his only real world source of information

Ok, this is now turning into one of those posts where a few posters are acting like mensturating 16 year old girls. If anything is true, its that there is a shitload of wrong, misguided, or outdated information on the M24. Hell there is an entire build guide on the M40 series of rifles, but nothing on the m24.
Now from a little research done the M24 was undecided for a while as far as its future. From what I have read and whatnot it seems the M110 is going to be the new 7.62x51 rifle. The M24, still in a purchase contract till 2010, is still going to be used. The Army is finally going to take advantage of the long action, and go with a .300WM. So while the M110 is fielded the M24 gets the makeover it needs.
As far as immortalizing..Why shouldnt anyone give this rifle attention? The M40 is special because it is built by Marines, in house. The M24 is a manufacturer built rifle. Both done well enough to accomplish outstanding shots over the years.
Here is an attraction that I think gets a lot of attention. They are built off of factory actions, using some up to date gunsmithing, and quality parts. Something anyone with the money can have done. Who wouldnt want to emulate these guns?

It's already been said but I think you might do well by hearing it again. The M110 is NOT replacing the M24. Don't have one hadny but here is one the day I sighted it in. First 7 down the tube from 200 yards. You'll notice first two then the one in the middle. The ones in the four corners around it were done on purpose to hit the four squares.

Re: Army M24 Build Thread

The Marines, we don't have the problem with our rifles that you Army boys do. Know why? We make them, we don't buy a Remington 700 that is doubled in price and sell it to the govt and call it a sniper rifle.

That ss of mine again will shoot as well as any M24 ever issued. And I paid a grand for it, before the other adds.
