Ashbury/Vectronix Tripod Question???

I see a lot of people on here rave about the Ashbury tripod, and I wondered why? Don't get me wrong, it looks a good bit of kit, but I don't see it as going anything any number of conventional tripod can do?

It seems to be that its main boasts are the "tacticool" factor plus its relative rarity?

So why is it better than a conventional tripod? And when I say "conventional" I mean one of good quality, not some cheap chinese bit of crap from Walmart...

Re: Ashbury/Vectronix Tripod Question???

I've ordered the tripod from vectronix for my PLRF 10 C... is not cheap.... is a magnetic, so no problem when you have to use the internal compass...... I think I'll get it in about a week..... after I can tell you more..

Re: Ashbury/Vectronix Tripod Question???

I can see the benifit of an anti-magnetic tripod if you are using a lazer range finder with a built in compass as you are, but for most people its not really an issue.

Besides most alloy and carbonfibre tripods would be largely anti-magnetic, although you'd have to check the tripod heads don't steel parts in them...

But from a stability perspective, a small tripod is a small tripod and it will always be limited by its foot print and its lack of weight...

Re: Ashbury/Vectronix Tripod Question???

I've got the Vectronix SST-3 mini tripod, think it's great, and these are what I see as some of the advantages:
- non-magnetic for LRFs with compass (mine's currently Newcon 2500CI)
- has spade 'feet', and stays in place on steep wet slopes
- sized for prone and sitting use
- when extended the centre of gravity stays low, and mine has never blown over
- has a gimbal making levelling easy ie don't have to adjust legs
- it's very sturdy and strong
- can remove the centre rod making a monopod
- the fixed legs mean theres little possibility of your gear falling over eg photo tripod legs may slide if not screwed/locked shut
- it'll support firing my AWSM in a rifle rest (sitting)

Whatever you get I recommend quick release heads - and get one plate for all the bits you're going to mount.

Here it is mine , it's a very good tripod , not too much compact but rock solid indeed .

Re: Ashbury/Vectronix Tripod Question???

I was just on Gunbroker, and saw that an Ashbury TACT3 just sold for $197.00, the thing is that was the 2nd attempt on the auction. The first time it wasn't even bid on, it could have been had for $99.95 + S&H. I wish I would have seen that.

Re: Ashbury/Vectronix Tripod Question???

Here's my take on the Ashbury TACT-3S (I have one):

* Very sturdy and stable.
* Lightweight.
* Non-magnetic head.
* Removeable mounting plate for easy, quick attachment.
* The telescoping sections fit together well and have excellent lockup clamps.
* Pan-tilt head works well and the clamping knob can be used as a short handle for pointing the optic.
* Folds to a small size, easily carried in a small pack.
* Has a gimble mount where the legs join, so it can be easily adjusted vertically on a sloping surface.
* Has a stored spike in the bottom section if needed.
* Well made.
