    Buck with Tami Augustyn (Facebook)
A dog found shot in the head and face with a pellet gun, stuffed in a garbage bag and left to die is recovering from his injuries at an animal clinic in Texas. And it's thanks, in part, to a Facebook campaign launched to help pay for his veterinary bills.

The bag containing the 3-year-old male mixed breed was discovered tied to a fence in Conroe, Texas, earlier this month. When local residents opened the bag, the dog emerged, took a few steps and collapsed, according to the Montgomery County Police Reporter.

The dog was covered in blood, said neighbor Tami Augustyn, leading her to believe he was a "bait dog"—or a dog used by fight dogs for practice.

Augustyn rushed the dog to an emergency animal clinic, where he was treated for multiple bird-shot pellets to the face, eyes, mouth, neck and shoulders, and hypothermia from being left outside overnight.

The pooch was stabilized, but according to Dr. Ron Hendrick, a vet at the Animal Emergency Clinic of Conroe, pellets remain in both eyes and it's unclear whether the dog—nicknamed Buck—was left permanently blind.

A Facebook page, Buck Needs Bucks for his Buckshot Injuries, launched last week by Augustyn to help pay for the dog's estimated $5,000 in medical bills, has attracted nearly 7,000 "likes" and, according to its creator, already more than enough donations to pay for his treatment.

"The last 24 hours has been overwhelming for me," Augustyn wrote on the page. "I have gone from not knowing if I would have enough money to pay for Buck’s emergency bill to having an unbelievable amount of money to provide THE BEST care possible for Buck’s recovery. I have thought long and hard about this today and how I should handle this. The conclusion is that I will be opening a separate bank account for Buck and all donations will channel thru that account and be used for Buck’s recovery and necessities."

With the help of Facebook, Buck's story quickly sparked international interest. ("The dog who wouldn't die," the U.K.'s Daily Mail proclaimed.)

Buck is now walking, Augustyn says, and an appointment with an opthamologist scheduled for Wednesday will determine what can be done about his vision.

Police in Montgomery County say they are investigating the incident, and Augustyn says she has been in contact with law enforcement officials about donating a reward for information leading to the arrest of the person responsible.

Sadly, cases like Buck's are not uncommon, particularly in Texas.

In July, a small dog was discovered tortured in what the Dallas Morning News described as "one of the worst cases of animal cruelty ever reported in the county."

The pug mix—nicknamed Hope by her rescuers—was found near Weatherford, Texas, dehydrated, with her mouth sealed shut with electrical tape, tongue protruding and five large cuts that took more than 100 stitches to close. Hope was later adopted by the family on whose ranch she was first spotted wandering.

And Hendrick told the paper he sees animals "wounded as badly as Buck about once a month."

    Re: Ass whoopin due

There are no words that would describe what I think should be done to people who would do such things to an animal. Ass whooping doesn't begin to get even close.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

My dogs follow right behind my kids when it comes to the price that woud be paid for messing with either.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

Certainly a very harsh punishment is due whomever did this but to spend $5000 and put that animal through more pain and suffering is inhumane and ridiculous. Euthanasia is the proper response.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

My dogs are as much of a part of my family as any human member. I can only hope that this worthless waste of life is found by a good old boy who will handle it "TEXAS STYLE"

    Re: Ass whoopin due

We all know what the worthless SOB's that did this end up being later in life...just older worthless SOB's! Sad reality.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

sounds a bit to me like a 'serial killer in-training', according to the "hype".

Better off just whack'n 'em, in my opinion. ( the perpetrators, not the dogs).

There ain't no worth, value, or 'coming-back' for individuals who do such things.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

The way I/we was raised, the dogs are as much family as everyone else. Just that they don't have furntiture privledges. But otherwise, critters with 4 legs are family, with ALL that that entails, Period. Don't matter if they're dogs, horses, or other. And call me old fashioned, but I take offense to people & establishments who actively don't like pets.

As to the piece of crap who did this to the dog, i've got some ideas as to what they deserve, but they don't bear sharing aloud.

I just hope that the dog gets better, has a decent quality of life, & lots & lots of love. Bravo to those who are looking after him! And to everyone that's helped along the way.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

Who ever did that is less than human or animal. They need to be smeared from the general population.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

Euthanasia you say is better, How about next time you brake a leg or arm or get into a car accident the Doctor writes down euthanasia. My animals are family and i protect them the way i do my wife daughter and grand kids. I spent 28 days in the hospital but know body wrote down euthanasia. MM

    How about"

-Shootem in the face with birdshot.
-Putem in a big plastic bag.
-Tie'em to a fencepost, in Texas, in August.
-Wait three days ad call the sanitation dept to clean up what the buzzards leave.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

No sense punishing the sanitation dept, birds and yotes gotta eat too.

    Re: Ass whoopin due

Can't even imagine what I would do if I caught someone doing this to an animal. Especially if it were my dog.

I agree MM. I'm all about saving an animal if at all possible. Euthanasia would be a last resort. Animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc.) are like family.

If someone wants to spend 5 grand on their pet I have not quarrel with that but the fact remains that dogs are not humans. Aside from that, what we're talking about here is not someone's lifelong companion/pet but an abandoned dog that is facing multiple surgeries and long, painful recovery and will still likely be blind. If someone really wants to save animals that $5000 could go a long way toward saving many healthy animals that are on death row at your local animal shelter. Saving an animal's life is a good thing but I think this response is over the top for this particular animal.

Anybody up for sending $5000 a month for the others?
