Rifle Scopes Athlon Turret Fix Question

This may be a dumb question but I'll ask anyways. When removing the old thick grease from the turrets, use of a solvent is mentioned. What exactly would be a good product to use to remove the old grease before applying the new thin grease? Plain old alcohol swabs? Or something more specific and appropriate? Thanks in advance...
