Atlas Bi-Pod Junk???

This is like a Honda dealer telling every customer he prefers Nissan's because Honda's are Junk??. Not only are the customers not going to buy Hondas from him, they're not even going to buy Nissans from him. The economy has made people stir crazy I tell you. You should be in the business you're in because you love what you do and sell the products you sell because you believe in them, if not, you're in the wrong business selling the wrong products. But that's just my opinion.

That is a terrible analogy.

If I were a cynic I might guess that a dirt bag dealer who had stopped paying his bills and been cut off from new product might start a thread bashing the product hoping to provide a plausible explanation as to why they no longer carry that brand.

Is this for real? I clicked the link (to a facebook page) and the link from there to a website (Air Jordan shoes,Cheap jordans online,cheap jordans for sale,free shipping cheap jordans) is for a shoe store
Also a quick look at the facebook pictures shows the problem- they shoot with the bipod feet on top of sandbags instead of loading the legs- the Atlas kickstand is too wobbly of course.

It looks like you already have takers but if you end up stuck with it I'll swap you a Harris of your choice as well!

I don't see his post as "condemning". The subject line was aggressive but when you read the actual post it seem that he generally likes the design but not the play in the legs.

I’m not sure what you are saying here, but B&T does not promote any of one of our dealers over another and I certainly would not do so in this manner.

I appreciate your willingness to give the Atlas a try. The Atlas is different in every way from the Harris outside both attach to a firearm and have two legs. Everything you do with the Atlas legs is intentional, they will not deploy, fold, extend or retract unless you want them to. As far as “finer points of position building”, I doubt that’s the issue, I suspect your familiarity with the Harris vs. the Atlas worked against the Atlas. I mean we sold the Harris and I never thought there was a problem with them, our customers started asking about a different bipod, I listened. And I’m proud that our products have been of service to some shooters.

“Maybe it should be said that using an Atlas bipod requires some retraining for all but those who have never really used a bipod.” As silly as that may sound, there’s some truth to it! I cannot tell you how many people try to pull the legs down AFTER being told “push this button”!!! Which is really testimony to the Harris being THE bipod!

And to those that shared your thoughts and opinions, rock on! I have and will continue to respect others opinions when they are based on fact. And to those that use our products with success and enjoyment and have offered to share your experience with others, we are indebted to you. that feature to me would be the "pan" movement and not really being able to lock that perpendicular to the gun. when you load the bipod you want the load to be even and straight. if i engage a target and quickly move left or right to engage another target i shift my body quickly to try and get myself pointed at the target and have some npa if possible. when i do this with a harris bipod it goes with with me and stays square to the target. yours does not making another step of reaching up to bring that bipod sqaure to the target. if you do shoot it off axis i find its not conducive to the most accuracy by having a form of torque applied to the rifle from inconsistent load. yes, easily fixed if its square but something i personally dont care for.

the pivot ball looses torque on the v8 i had after 1-3 shots of normal 308 cased cartridges. constant retightening of the pivot tension knob turned me off too. when i level the rifle a nd let go of it i kinda want it to stay there with out having to muscle it.

thats my personal opinion and in no way meant as complaining or degrading etc. i think you have a good product and you're obviously interested in feed back and thoughts. a hybrid of your bipod and some of the harris features would be the ultimate to me. if i could pin the pan feature in place that would be enough for me.

TimeWillTell - We are going for 2nd prototype late third quarter. I was cranking on it and could have taken the easy route to completion at the 85% done mark I had an idea.....to make it even lighter and stronger. So now I can't shake it and am pursuing it when I'm not having fun here! LOL

Well if you need a tester for the second prototype I will have a newly built 338 LM done some time in october (hopefully)! Should weight about 21lbs all dressed.

I'm impressed with the way Kasey has handled himself and the way the 'Hide spoke up and backed what they believe in. I had decided on purchasing a Harris bipod without looking at Atlas because most of the posts I have read through say something to the effect of "...if on a budget, buy Harris, if you have money, buy Atlas". Because of the strong support from the 'Hide and the professionalism demonstrated by Kasey, I'll save my money and give Atlas a look.

Even though it wasn't the most tactful way to start a thread... if it hadn't been for this thread, I'd a probably just bought the Harris and never thought twice due to ignorance on my part. Thanks 'Hide!

Kasey has been the most honest person I've met when it comes to where the Harris may be a better choice and where Atlas excels. I'd always used Harris because that's just what people used and I had no reason to change. I sort of dismissed Atlas as something really cool that I probably didn't need and could get by without. During the PSR group buy thread, Kasey impressed me so much with his commitment to his products, and to the members here, that I bought my first one through that group buy.

The customer service during that group buy "sold" me on the company and their products.

I am not trying to flame your product. As I stated I own one. It was just a bit of a pain from 500 and in for rapid acquisition on softer sandy turf because the right to left swivel had the feet moving as the bipod dug into the sandy soil when loading it.

While I agree his thread title was rough and using that term is being kind to him. I think it opens up an opportunity for discussion about issues, if any, people may have with a product.
I try to read what a person is saying and not just the words they are typing. Sometimes nuggets are hidden in there.
But, that is just my way.

There are claws for a wider platform on sandy surfaces, and the fact it may "loosen" has no bearing on use or accuracy. -- See Parker Hale / Versa Pod
That is a matter of technique as well it has been successfully addressed in the PSR version which has a different knob for more leverage when tightening it, and it has the rubber stops for friction.

The Atlas does requires a better technique, although, the Harris is far less forgiving because it is stiffer. The movement in the Atlas absorbs the recoil, and if it loosen at all, you need to do nothing more than move your belt up with your toes. If you have issue of the legs being moved off center or out of alignment that is identifying a weakness is your position as well can indicate you're muscling the rifle. Most of the time when you read things like, The legs are rolling, the rifle is moving sideways, etc, it's an indicator of a bad position.

The Harris on the other hand, has the same diameter feet, so if one sinks in the dirt the other will too. Also I have found several Harris bipods to not be "square" the legs can be uneven and of different heights from one leg to the other that needs the "cant" to fix. I have one here where the distance is uneven from the top to the base of the feet. One leg is essentially shorter than the other. That design has not be updated since day one unless you go to to an aftermarket fix. In every class I teach I find those who can't adjust the cant tension because the nut doesn't work correctly, (yes the Pod Lock helps but that is aftermarket)

Clearly the trend in all this, be it a new scopes, bipods, etc, comes down to price. The biggest complaints are usually rooted in the cost comparison. Sure you can deny it, but it's pretty clear to see and many are noticing the trend. This topic has started to rise to the top. That Steiner with a new scope @ $2k is a win, and anything over $3k+ is a lose unless.... Because people can buy more than one Harris vs an Atlas puts it in, "doesn't wow me" category, mainly because there is a learning curve involved. Still what people don't get is, the number of "bipod hops" threads which mostly happen with a Harris because of the unforgiving nature of the design. My recoil management videos in the Online Training are about 40 minutes worth, so that demonstrates that technique matters. In the end if done correctly there is no loss of accuracy when using a Atlas.

Kasey is a class act and has always gone out of his way to address any real problems people have had with the design. He has not said, "Take what i give you" like Harris has, and gives each issue it's due process. I will say I still use my V7 with equal success and the only thing I do different is use the V7 loose vs the V8 or PSR which I tend to keep tighter. But then again, I can be successful at both accuracy and recoil management with my factory Parker Hale on my AI, so your mileage may vary.

Was intending to use "your" in a general term. Speaking about the OP: Everyone deserves an opinion, the words we use can sometimes make that opinion insulting. Being insulted for no reason gives that person the right to defend themselves in the same manner the insult was intended. This is what happened here. The OP could have easily started the thread with: "Issues with the Atlas" instead it was "Atlas Bipod Junk???" and you still don't think flaming this guy is warranted.......that's your opinion.

Oh...I think it is warranted.
He starts a thread using inflammatory and aggressive language about a product HE DOESN'T APPEAR TO OWN.
He handled it at a Shot Show for crying out loud. (I looked at a Rolex once in a store and the strap was too big so it must be piece of crap!!)

I have a notched 6-9 Harris from Larue with the Larue QD mount. It is in excellent condition, as it has seen very little use. I would gladly trade with anyone here for a second Atlas with QD in similar condition.

That is a matter of technique as well it has been successfully addressed in the PSR version which has a different knob for more leverage when tightening it, and it has the rubber stops for friction.

The Atlas does requires a better technique, although, the Harris is far less forgiving because it is stiffer. The movement in the Atlas absorbs the recoil, and if it loosen at all, you need to do nothing more than move your belt up with your toes. If you have issue of the legs being moved off center or out of alignment that is identifying a weakness is your position as well can indicate you're muscling the rifle. Most of the time when you read things like, The legs are rolling, the rifle is moving sideways, etc, it's an indicator of a bad position.

The Harris on the other hand, has the same diameter feet, so if one sinks in the dirt the other will too. Also I have found several Harris bipods to not be "square" the legs can be uneven and of different heights from one leg to the other that needs the "cant" to fix. I have one here where the distance is uneven from the top to the base of the feet. One leg is essentially shorter than the other. That design has not be updated since day one unless you go to to an aftermarket fix. In every class I teach I find those who can't adjust the cant tension because the nut doesn't work correctly, (yes the Pod Lock helps but that is aftermarket)

Clearly the trend in all this, be it a new scopes, bipods, etc, comes down to price. The biggest complaints are usually rooted in the cost comparison. Sure you can deny it, but it's pretty clear to see and many are noticing the trend. This topic has started to rise to the top. That Steiner with a new scope @ $2k is a win, and anything over $3k+ is a lose unless.... considering i used one a couple years and nothing else makes me think i am intimately familiar with it as well. i spent years upon years with harris also. the things i mentioned must have held some water with the designer somewhere along the line and i doubt it was because i was the only one who mentioned them. the atlas does work, it is a good product, it does have room for improvement much like anything else. kasey is listening and to that i say he can do nothing but succeed in his businesss model by doing so.

Killswitch Engage- I believe Lowlight was addressing trickyric in shooting in sand. The Pan feature was demanded for the SCAR program, not long range shooting.

trickyric - I don't take anything you have posted as flaming the Atlas nor will I make excuses for your experience with the Atlas. I'll respectfully suggest going to a school house where "None of the instructors were fans of them." made it tough on you and "easy" to look at the Atlas as a source of the problem.

This I know, that the Pan feature of the Atlas cannot pan in of itself, it has to be influenced by something, be it human or nature. Any bipod with 1" diameter feet will work their way down into sand if making repeated shots from that position until there is enough friction bearing on the feet/legs to stop or greatly decrease it's downward travel. In a perfect world the sand is consistent under both feet and they work down evenly, on foot catches a root, rock or wet sand, game changer, the Atlas will twist others with torque under recoil. Which is better?

I'll also suggest that if I have to pick my rifle up and reposition it, while doing so I can observe and compensate for the pan of the legs by going past or stopping short and bringing the butt back into the shoulder to straighten the legs to the bore.

I also know of a few guys that are well traveled to places sandy and have shot a ton off Atlas bipods engaging multiple targets. They like the Pan feature. Their budget allows them to get whatever they want and it's an honor they want the Atlas.

But again, everyone has their own opinion and shooting style.

I currently use the Atlas. Don't have plans to change. I have met people who prefer others. My issue is more of a wish list thing. I am not the first person to comment on this cite about the right to left being somewhat of a problem at times. So, obviously other people have had issues. I don't really want to debate my experience or skill level.
This thread has become a flamefest though and I don't think that is how people should communicate.

Merit would assume that everyone is capable, and many, many shooters will immediately deny it is "them" ... so what happens is companies have to adjust to the lowest common denominator. That is how it works, doing the same thing over and over again doesn't make you competent, just makes you consistent. There are a lot of really good shooters with really bad habits who have learned to adapt to their bad habits.

Prime example, watch how many 1/4 MOA shooter consistently "tap" the trigger and don't follow through, despite Follow Through being a basic Fundamental. Because of the weight of the rifles, the triggers, etc, we find everyday that people can operate very successfully in terms of pure accuracy, but completely forgo follow through. Take them out of their comfort zone and their lack of follow through creates all sorts of issues. The response is always the same, "But I can shoot 1/4MOA at home" .

I doubt there is anything new for me to hear/read about the Atlas functions good or bad, but even if you were the first to bring it up, I'd still treat it as valid because that was/is YOUR experience. I was simply suggesting my experiences and how I try to compensate for inadvertent panned legs when moving to another position. Again, if you're use to a Harris the legs are fixed so no thought goes into their position when moving.

Also, my communication skill set sucks but I'm trying to improve it.

All very fair statements. You make a great product. I cannot find a better bipod for sure.
Like I stated earlier mine is more of wish list item.
It was easily dealt with by reaching forward after strings of fire to adjust the legs back.
Not a big deal at all.

What does being a woman or being a "Class 3 dealer" have to do with this thread? There are actually a bunch of Title II dealers/manufacturers in Nevada. I know this because I am an 07FFL/02SOT holder as well, and have done business with numerous FFL/SOTs in Nevada.

Why would you post the fact of being a "Class 3 dealer" if you are not trying to promote your business?

I am a "Title 3 dealer", but I will not name my company, or throw out my gender, as both are irrelevant to the topic of this thread.
