I just finished my second Duracoat project and am pumped with how great the results of my work were. I painted a GAP 2-color camo on my HS Precision stock for my Remington 700 .223. I used Lauer's "tactical" colors and chose coyote tan and OD green. I ordered the reusable vinyl stencils from Bulldog Arms, they were great quality and are definitely reusable and were less than $20. All in all, Duracoating is as easy to do as they say, I was intimidated at first of course, but it really is quite simple. I'm using a Paasche double action mini brush and a small 1/10 horsepower compressor, nothing too fancy. The prep work is time consuming but Lauer's directions are very good. The Ruger was my first attempt and it turned out great. Here are the pics, including my 10/22 that came out great with the coyote tan and black barrel flutes:

Im stuck now deciding what to do with the Remington's barrel, receiver, trigger guard assembly, cheek piece, bipod, scope and rings/base. My goal is to have a clean look when all coating is completed. I am about to install a Badger knob on the bolt and no matter what I do, I am going to leave the bolt jeweling on the bolt body. My thoughts are:

1. Do a matte black coating to even everything out as the finishes are different between scope, barrel, bipod etc.
2. Continue the camo job and do the entire rifle, scope, bipod, etc. I like this idea, but I don't know if it would be a bit too busy or over the top. And it would take forever with the prep work, but may be worth it.
3. Incorporate another color similar to the OD green or tan to do some or all of the other parts of the rifle

What are your thoughts/suggestions/ideas. Please let me know because I'm torn! Thanks for the advice as always.

Awesome job!
I would proceed with option "1". I think the simple contrast is what makes the job so clean...
What was your method for making the flutes black and the barrel tan on the 10/22? I have done this on several rifles and found no "easy" way!

Actually, I got the idea from when I used to be a skateboarder when I was younger haha. When you put the grip tape on top of the board, you apply the whole sheet then use a file and go around all the edges to take off the excess.

For my Ruger's barrel I used a green scotchbrite pad to take the bluing off the barrel, leaving the bluing on the inside of the flutes though. Then I masked the flutes one at a time with regular masking tape, then took fine sandpaper and sanded the edges of the flutes. This left the tape inside the flutes but took off the excess around the edges on the barrel. Then I sprayed the tan then peeled off the tape with an exacto knife after curing. I was surprised at how easy it was to do as well as how clean the results were. Though if I could do it again, I would do a coat of black on the entire barrel first then proceed with masking the flutes and spraying the tan. But it looks good how it is now and since it was my first duracoat job I'm pleased.

Thanks for the compliments, I'm going for a really clean and simple look, I'm glad that it's working out so far

Re: Awesome Duracoat Results, Help me decide next

if you want clean and simple, id just go matte black on the barreled action. but i think od on it would look just as good as well.

where in ohio are you located?

btw, that 10/22 looks really good. i think it would look even cooler with a desert 3 color camo on the stock!

Re: Awesome Duracoat Results, Help me decide next

How about alternating tan with OD green on different surfaces with different angles? Including alternating colors for lips of stock, trigger guard, rings, etc.

I'm having a hard time trying to see your idea in my head..could you elaborate a bit? thanks for the input though

I'm leaning towards the Matte Black as well. It will really even out the different finishes. I might do OD green on a few accent pieces like the scope rings and mount. Maybe parts of the bipod too or the knobs on my Karsten cheek piece. If I don't like it I could always go over it again with black.

I'm in NE Ohio, just south of Youngstown in the boardman/canfield area

I would LOVE to paint the stock on my .22 but unfortunately it's a Hogue and the rubber-like coating that it has probably wouldn't hold duracoat that well. I'll be replacing the stock some time this summer for sure though...then I'll paint it. Maybe a Boyd's Tacticool model as I have a hard time justifying putting a Bell and Carlson on my little .22 but we'll see.

Re: Awesome Duracoat Results, Help me decide next step

I've decided to do a matte black coating on everything in order to even out the finishes.

I am also going to use OD green to accent some parts.
My badger knob is being installed by a local machinist so I'm going to do the OD on:

bolt knob or shroud or both
scope mount and rings
karsten knobs
a few parts of the bipod

I'll post pics when it's all done, probably going to be a week or so unfortunately. The 4th of july is going to be a busy weekend

Nice job! You could do the cheek rest to match the camo pattern. If you haven't done so, you can do a matt clear coat over everything when its all done. PS Nice rug as well, Semper Fi. Mark

Ok, that's sweet and I need to know moar! Did you get the airgun and compressor setup as a kit or did you order them separate? I'm going to have to order up something pretty soon.

Thanks,

I used a Paasche VL double action airbrush and a Paasche 1/10hp diaphragm compressor. I've had the airbrush equipment for over 10 years as I used to be into model airplanes.

what other questions do you have? pm me.

Re: Awesome Duracoat Results, Help me decide next

Hey I just finished my buddy's old LLama 1911 that he's building as a project gun. This was my first pistol that I've coated and only the third duracoat project for me...it turned out amazing.

The picture is a bit grainy as it was taken on his phone's camera. I'll take some higher quality pics on friday when I stop by his shop.

Wish I could upload a pic, but what I mean is use tan and OD green. Th flat parts of stock one color, the angled portions the other...the flutes one, the barrel the other, etc. for all the different angled surfaces. Just a thought.

Re: Awesome Duracoat Results, Help me decide next

If it were my rifle I would coat the metal work & scope in a flat black oxide tone & then matte clear everything to finish it off. The black will keep it very clean looking & the stock camo will look even better.

I never say things to disrespect others thoughts or likes so please do not take this the wrong way but doing little pieces as accents in a different color looks out of place & possibly cheap. I could be wrong as I would have to see it first but leave the scope rings black or the same color as the action.
