    Re: Awesome opportunity

I was on this bandwagon years ago when I, a young man of high school age, worked in a hot kitchen watching dishes for 2.5 years before going into the U.S. Army.

Unfortunately a large portion of my fellow young white males had an aversion to such work and preferred bailouts by their immediate governing authorities.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

Most are too sorry to take the work.
A lot of farming goes on around here and you will not see a white or a black face in the field unless it is the owner. The out of work are too sorry to take a $6.80 /hr job working as a farm hand.

They would rather thieve, kill or starve rather than work.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

I honestly feel like this would be a good way to get the youth more involved. I'm not talking about 10hr days but if you employed enough of them they could work an hour or two at a time and it would keep them out of trouble and tech them the value of a dollar. They don't need benefits or as high of wages as a bread winner for a family. IMO we were too afraid of turning into a child labor country and went a little overboard on our laws regarding children working for pay. I don't know about you but when I was a kid I did farm work on the summers and while it was hot, hard work that I wasn't paid well for I'm a MUCH better person for it today. There wasn't child labor laws or we didn't care much about them if there were so I worked long hot days and it was a great experience. I may not have felt that at the time or at least not every day but right now we have a couple problems with one solution. Childhood obesity is becoming an epidemic. All that money that migrant workers is making (or at least the lion's share of it) is leaving the country to fuel another economy. Because of decades of our current system farmers can't afford to pay a minimum wage and benefits to every worker. Crime rates amongst young adults is sky rocketing. All of these can be cured with the same solution... put kids to work. Again, read what I'm saying here because I'm not talking about 10-18hr days in horrid conditions. Just a couple hours here and there. You get a large enough rotating 'team' of youngsters this could work.

    Just a thought I guess.

That's the sentiment of many, many folks. We need to make unemployment/welfare harder to get - I can't tell you how many times I've interviewed people for a comfy in-office job, minimally-skilled entry position @ 12-14/hr and got the response "No thanks, my unemployment is much better than that".
And every person that uses these resources is sucking the resources and tax dollars of those that do have a work ethic.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

I signed up. As long as they pay a real wage, I might even take the job. I doubt they'll call however as they are simply trying to reinforce the opinion that Americans wont work these jobs. But people will, just not at $2/hr. If farmers can't afford to pay real wages with all the subsides and aid programs out there, they should raise prices or mortgage a machine to do it. Welcome to the world of business, enjoy your stay.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

Maybe they should start one of these for the construction industry as well. I know a bunch of crap ass contractors who can't seem to find Americans to fill their labor pool either; despite my having no less than 10 friends with years of construction experience who can't find work. Then, my friends are all lazy and have entitlement mentalities. They are selfish enough to expect more than $50 for a 10 hour day, and asinine enough to expect (mandated) workers comp coverage.

I hear you on the unemployment being harder to get. One of my brother in laws is on unemployment, has been for over a year. Not only that but he also has a job. Thats right, he has a job and draws unemployment. He also got a "bonus" on his unemployment this year for "stimulus". Yeah, I'm real proud of him.

Call the state unemployment office and report their lazy arsses. I don't know if it's the same in Texas, but in FL unless you are going to school and the job wont work around your class schedule, you are obligated to take any legitimate job offer (even if it's of substantially lower monetary value than your previous position) or you lose your benefits.

To bad you're in Texas, I know two well qualified people who would love that job at those rates. Here, entry clerical starts at $7/hr. My sister handled billing, payments, and contractor records for the city for 4 years and wasn't making $10/hr.

Yeah that must be a state problem. Here in Oregon you're required to apply for jobs, you can't pass up on a job you are reasonably qualified for, they will push jobs on you, and they check up to make sure you aren't bs'ing.

It's an important program I'm not all to familiar with. I've never not had a job since I was 15. I imagine if I did lose my job I would really appreciate a safetynet though.

Not sure if you're referring to me or not but I was was playing devils advocate: playing the role of the typical lazy sob. At the risk of being political: today the effort to push thought 35 billion more in unemployment funding was blocked and squashed by the GOP.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

Well, I don't know how easy it is to get unemployment I've never gotten it. I do know that to get it you have to have worked first, and you can only get it under certain conditions ending your employment. I know that they make you try to get a job while you're on it, and followup on that.

I also know that if I ever lose my job for some reason I really hope it's available for me.

Oh, don't get me wrong I agree with you all the way. I think that unemployment solves a lot more problems than it creates. There would be nothing worse than suddenly finding 5 million people without jobs or any income stream. Crime would skyrocket and then everybody pays, big time.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

I have two guys who work on my farm for me during the busy summer hay season, and do most of the fence and any other things that need done on the farm. I pay them $10 an hour. That really is more than I can afford, but for straight cash I guess it is not too bad for them. I do not know what thy do during other times of the year for money. But they also do some work for me in the other seasons, but not full time work. This is their second year they have worked for me, and I think they will be back.

Overall they are good workers. And they do not steal from me.

I just bought another small farm with 66 acres and another farm house on it. The house needs a little work, but I am working a deal with one of them to live in the house all year.

I am only posting this because there is work out there if someone wants to work. Maybe they will not get rich. but there is work.

The funny part of this story is this. I have a friend who drove truck cross country for years. He went to Mexico and brought a lady(about 35 years old) back with him just to keep his house clean. He ended up marrying the lady-getting her citizenship then sending her to work at the best place in Morgantown. They had to hire her-she was a minority. He hasn't worked a lick in twenty years. He has three of her family members(illegal) living in his barn and doing all the farm work for room and board. And as far as the Mexicans are concerned they think they are in hog heaven. They have never had it so good. They eat meat for dinner every day, don't have to work very hard, clean clothes, clean bed and a warm bedroom. They love it. Hard to believe how some other people live around the world. Makes me appreciate what I have.

He tried to get me to bring his wifes sister up here for me. But I can not bring myself to do it. But free labor sounds good?? Hard to believe. ain't it. Tom.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

OK, I'll do it, BUT I want:
A solid wage above subsistance living level
    100% paid medical/dental/eye glasses
    15 days paid vacation bi-annualy
Clothing allowance for the work clothes
A 5 Day work week with two days a week off

They can take that or go buy the damn equipment that will pick it with a computerized program. The cheap bastards have not stepped into the 21st centruy because both the government and people have allowed them to use illegal aliens for so long it's like their crack. They are seriously hooked on cheap inexpensive labor they don't have to pay jack shit too. Blame it on the government telling farmers what to plant and raise and harvest. Freakin bean counters telling folks what's best....kinda like a little black mouse shooter so long ago that we been stuck with for close to 50 years.

ps If I am bringing one o them latina hotties to my place, Panty 6 is fired and I get BJ's every morning wood, fresh coffe made, no whining, bitching, moaning about housework, no monthly bs when it's 'that time' and the wench better know how to cook, clean, launder, and polish my bikes too... ROFLMMFAO, like that will ever happen! Remember, shoot them on sight as they cross, and if you see that wench trying to squeeze one out.....here it comes again....drop the anchor

That web site seems to neglect the fact that none of them made that web site.
It comes down to the UNITED FARM WORKERS of AMERICA, AFL-CIO thugs. This is their doing and their president Arturo S. Rodriguez. If they had there way Kalifornia would be part of Mexico.

    Re: Awesome opportunity

I grew up union, but after seeing the damage my Pop's generation has done politically, screw that noise. It took me beating him up verbally for the other million reasons to not vote the union line(Democrat) because of the die hard anti gun stance. Unions gave superb lip service to that, but still supported all the NRA DO NOT VOTE FOR candidates.
UFWA can suck it, and the farmers that haven't stepped into teh 21st century can join them. I see it all as a concerted effert to maintain a certain amount of illegal alian workforce here to destabilize the areas where they live for some other agenda

    Re: Awesome opportunity

I saw my friend and his family lose their house, cars, everything, because his dad got laid off, and refused to take a job he was, "over-qualified" for, thus, house was foreclosed on, cars repo'd. He's on his own now, his brother joined the Navy, and his parents are now in a POS, 1 bedroom apt with a crap beater car. His mom is disabled, so they are living on her Social Security and his dad finally got off his big-headed, proud ass and got a job to make ends meet.

I've been working since I was 13. My first job was as a busser at a steakhouse a couple hrs, a few days a week after school. I got let off there due to child labor laws after about 6 months or so. Then I worked construction during the summer under the table, McDs for about a month, bagger at a grocery store,
boat marina as a mechanic, detailer, grounds keeper, security (pretty much, jack of all trades...but got 22/hr at 17 and 18yrs old), car mechanic, and now I've been in the Air Force for almost 9 yrs.

No matter what, you can find a job, if you look hard enough. No, it might not be glamourous, might be back-breaking manual labor, but if it puts food on the table, and a roof over your head, shut the fuck up and actually earn a living, instead of living off the sweat of someone else's brow.

~I've stepped off my box, thanks~

It would be real cool if it was that easy, but here in TN if you are over qualified they will not hire you. I have been told that so much at places like Sonic's, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, most of the places I have applied to on base. All I really want is something that will cover the house and afew bills and get me away from Panty 6 for a few hours a day. She's a freakin slave driver. Rocks, concrete, dirt, grass, fences, cut this, saw that off, pull this over here, dig this out, move that...
    grin.gif

Oh, and I do thank you all for allowing me the privelage of living off your tax dollars for so long. I know you sweated each and every one of them out so I could have the latest high speed uniforms and kit, and for that privelage you have my greatest, most humble thanks. Really, I am truly thankful for all of that, all 25 years plus. If it were not for the hardest working folks in the US, California, and Hawaii, I would not have been able to do it for so long
