I bought a new AX Chassis from Mark at Short Action Customs a few days ago. It arrived today and I was able to get a Surgeon 591 7WSM barreled action put in it. I have to be honest, I bought this chassis be fairly certain that I would have it posted for sale within a few days due to me not liking it. I am not a fan of the AICS after having tried one for about 6 months last year. Well, after getting it all put together, I've really taken a liking to it from what I've been able to tell about it. It feels really great when I get behind it. It is alot less "plasticy feeling" than I thought it'd be. I just had my doubts about the sturdiness of it. I was very wrong. Also, I absolutely love the forend/rail. The fit and finish of the metal is excellent. The fit of the plastic parts are better than that of the AICS, but still it's plastic so it's not going to be prefect. Overall, I'm pleased with it thus far.

I have some higher rings coming that will hopefully be here tomorrow or Monday. I will be puttin my Beanland 591 6.5x47L barreled action in this chassis eventually, but I have a lil match to shoot in tomorrow so I didn't want to take the other rifle apart till I have some more time to shoot it. The 7WSM will do fine for now.

Here is a quick pic I took after I got it put together. I'll take a few more when I get my scope on it and the new Atlas bipod on it. Hopefully I'll be able to shoot it on Monday or Tuesday. I'm not sure yet if it will replace my T5A's, but I'm going to give it a fair chance.

    Re: AX/Surgeon 7WSM

Got home tonight and spent some time with it dry firing (still don't have the higher rings). It looks like I'm going to need to get a couple of extra spacers for the butt. I need about another 1/2"-3/4" or so to get comfy.

The grip and trigger guard have some rough edges on them where the seams don't match up perfectly. They will need to be sanded down with some fine grit paper to get them smoothed up a bit. It's not a big deal, but it's certainly noticeable.

Just wanted to update this post.

I received my rings today for SFWA. I ordered the Vortex PMR rings in the 1.26" height (These are made by Seekins i think. If not, they are damn good copies). They fit perfectly. There is about .080" clearance between the sunshade and the top of the hand guard. This is a NF 5.5-22x50. I know alot of people are asking about different scope/ring combos for this setup so I though I'd post a few pics incase anyone else is needing help with it. I'm going to take it out for some shooting tomorrow.

Im going to shoot the AX chassis for a while and see if I can get the feel for it. If it works out for me, I'll take the 7wsm out of it and put my 6.5x47 in it to shoot with in March. It's the same setup on a 591 action. If I can't get comfortable with it, I'll be shooting my T5A/6.5x47 in the match.

I'm guessing you were there Saturday, which one were you? That was my first match to shoot in and I know very few of the guys that were there.

Well good deal! We had about 46 shooters show up. They were a very nice group of guys to shoot with and alot were very helpful. The 2 cold bore shots were a lil tough, especially the 250 yd'r off shooting sticks, but I managed to get them both. I did well in the first round, but blew it in the 2nd round. I had some odd pressure issues arise with my loads and still haven't figured out why. I blew a couple primers on my 600 and 775 1moa targets. Anyway, it was a great match and I learned alot. Look forward to seeing you in March.

So what was the verdict on the new AX chassis? I ordered one for my current build should have it in the next couple weeks.

    What does your gun weigh?

I'm very happy with it overall. I spent yesterday shooting it on my 7wsm from 100yds out to 600yds. I still haven't decided on what grip I am most comfortable with (what side my thumb floats on), but I'm going to run it for a while. Last night I tore it down and removed the 7wsm and put in my 6.5x47L barreled action. I'm not sure what the rifle weighs in its current configuration. I'm sure it's north of 12-13 pounds with the 25" M40 contour barrel.

Thanks for this post. I was about to PM you asking that question!!!

I would like to ask you about the mags you are running. Did you modify them to feed you wsm?

It uses .300wsm Alpha Mags and feeds smooth.
