I have a question about the barrel crown. I have a Remington 700 308 LA (yes LA) with a 24" PAC-NOR super match #7 5R with a H-S stock. When I send the 175 SMK with Lapua brass and 43.5g of vargit and 210M primers, I noticed there is not a uniform pattern of powder residue at the end of the crown. Now talking to my shooting partner, he states it needs to be recrowned. Now discussing this with my Gunsmith he calls BS on this. Im wondering what is everyones thoughts on if this will effect group size or am I just worried about nothing?

Re: Barrel Crown

Have you tried the Q-tip test, flashlight test, or some other crown check to look for burrs or other damage?

How does it shoot now? A bad crown will do some goofy things. Some will "2 group" and some shoot like a 2-5MOA shotgun up close, how does your rifle perform now?

Re: Barrel Crown

Shoot the damn gun. If it hammers tell everyone to shut up and just enjoy your life.

If you get orphan off call shots that make no sense, consider having it redone AFTER you make damn sure your optics are good, your loading practices are sound, and that you really do know how to produce a well aimed shot over and over and over again.

There's no crystal ball. There's what the paper down range tells you. That's it.

Hope this helps.

Re: Barrel Crown

Or if it's worth $100 to ya to just have it re-crowned for peace of mind do it. But how it shoots says everything. If it shoots one solid group then its fine.

Re: Barrel Crown

His seems to be far worse than others I've scrolled past.
He doesn't want people to be able to scroll past his posts.

I was just informed I have an old computer, bad internet, and I promise to stop looking at porn before Snipershide.
The real problem is me, not funny animation.

Re: Barrel Crown

Two of my customers just returned from Africa. One was almost stomped to death as he took a pee behind his tent in the middle of the night by a black rhino.

Broken ribs, lots of lacerations, etc. . .

The other was charged by a monster of an elephant and lived to tell about it.

Hence why I picked this clip. Were all big Gary Larson fans.

Re: Barrel Crown

I can tell you this much. In Iraq if the AC units went on the frizt computers had to be shut down for fear of burning up processors and power supplies.

If your shop doesn't have AC, consider getting it. It makes a world of difference on anything electronic.

Re: Barrel Crown

If this is a problem for you guys, "turn off user's avatars" in your preferences section. Problem solved without having to ask users to remove their avatars.

Re: Barrel Crown

If desktop PC's overheat, it may be accumulated internal dust. The cooling fan pulls in everything.

When it's powered down, open the case and check inside. A few minutes with a 1" paintbrush feeding a vacuum crevice tool can restore cooler operation.

When I did corporate PC maintenance, this was part of the annual maintenance/upgrade cycle.

Re: Barrel Crown

Sorry guys I have not checked back, been on vacation. I have a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50MM Mil-Dot scop with Seekins 20MOA rail and TPS rings on it. Plus I am waiting for my Timney trigger to get here. I had the factory one modified and now it has worse creep and still a heavy 3(lb) pull so I am going to wait to see once I have this new trigger installed if that helps. No I have not done the Q-tip test since I have not heard of that.
