I have a DPMS 338 federal(.58" groups at 100yds) i get to keep. i am having to down size on number of guns due to divorce. thinking of going to a 243 cal upper to compliment the 338 fed. Is 243 critical for a barrel length? want something for pronhorns coyotes etc. ammo not $. easy to get. this would give me a broad range of hunting ability with one gun bag to carry.

I see the .243 as being more like a Varmint chambering than, say, a Bear chambering. I see it being happier with a Varmint-type barrel; say, a longer one.

Gas gun barrel lengths must be matched with gas port location and size. I'd be careful about customizing the length of your 243 AR barrel unless you are dealing with a company or smith that know what they are doing. Otherwise, you may become a frustrated owner. That said, 24 or 26 inch would probably be the best choices. Standard lengths and more appropriate for a "mini-magnum" which is what a 243 really is.
