I think I'll probably want to re-barrel my savage 10FP in the future. Its a 24x1-10 from the factory. I think I want to go down to something like a 20". Would 1-10 be ok or would faster or slower be better? I think I'd stick with a 308 chambering for now too shooting 175 smk or 155.5 berger or something along this lines.

Re: Barrel length vs. Twist rate?

For educational purposes why would one want a slower barrel w/ a faster twist on a shorter barrel; everything else being equal? Faster twist equals slower mv?

Re: Barrel length vs. Twist rate?

10 twist would be fine. I have a 10 twist on my 20" .308 and it runs just fine for velocity and accuracy.

Re: Barrel length vs. Twist rate?

So, if the only thing that dictates twist is length and weight of projectile, why go w/ a 10 twist on a 20 in barrel? Faster the twist; slower the mv??? One would think an 11 or 12 twist would be optimum for 168's or 175's unless ofcourse w/ a can one would want to shoot heavier subsonics?

Re: Barrel length vs. Twist rate?

ive been shooting the 155.5 bergers and the 175 smks. One of the guys in the local club was saying 1-11.25 would be good for a 20" 308. Whatever 20"er i get, i would obviously want to get the most velocity possible out of it... at least i would think i would

Re: Barrel length vs. Twist rate?

Turk why do you think that you will lose velocity from a 12 twist to a 10 twist? I went from a 12 twists to the 10 years back as my 12 twist wouldn't stabilize the 175s until they were over 2675fps and with the same load they were the same velocities. You are not going to see any dramatic differences between barrels in 10 to 12 twists as far as velocity. A good quality barrel no matter what the twist will do more for velocity.

OP a 11 twist will work fine if you wanted to go that route but I would never put a 12 twist on a .308 again. 11 would be the slowest.

Barrel length is not dictated by the twist rate.
